Too Many D*** Dirt Pedals

Does anyone else have this problem? For some reason I just keep acquiring more and more of them when there are so many other kinds of pedals that I don't own any of.

Re: Too Many D*** Dirt Pedals

Eventually, you'll bond with a few of them. Then, you can sell off the rest.

Don't make the mistake of selling good ones, just because. And, there's no point in owning too many of the same sound. Get a few that are all different but good.

Re: Too Many D*** Dirt Pedals

It seems like a saw a thread of MetalManiac's about a pedalboard that had nothing but dirt pedals on it.

Re: Too Many D*** Dirt Pedals

2 or 3 really, really good ones...that are versatile...is all you need!

i know most of you can't believe i said that...but i've been with only 2 for a long time now!

Re: Too Many D*** Dirt Pedals

Dirt pedals come in so many different flavors that it is easy to end up with several. Play them all and keep the ones you love. The ones that will actually get some use too.

I keep seeing new pedals I want but I don't let myself get them. Mainly because I haven't put my current gear through the paces to see what I really bond with. Otherwise i'd be in a similar position.

Re: Too Many D*** Dirt Pedals

I have 3 on my board that cover nearly everything I could want. Wampler Ecstacy, Brown Sound in a Box, and a KoT clone. I used to have a bunch of slightly different TS variations but I got rid of the ones that were not working for me. These 3 tend to work well with all my amps and they cover lots of tonal ground.

Nothing wrong at all with having more than a few.

Re: Too Many D*** Dirt Pedals

Yep ... lotsa temptation out there. I've sold a few, accidentally given one away, and still have a few I don't use. The trouble is that I like them too much to take the hit in the used market.

I just bought the Ecstacy. How do you like it? Which toggle switch setting do you prefer? In the little bit of time I've spent with mine I prefer the middle position with low gain using it as an almost clean boost.

yeah, but most have a use - so many amps act different with different pedals. I'm personally a little heavy on the OD, ok on the distortion front, and have a gap in the fuzz area.

Re: Too Many D*** Dirt Pedals

In answer to the OP, yes, I have a lot of dirt pedals, but I don't see it as a problem. For those of us who derive a lot of our various gain structures from pedals through a cleanish amp, they can provide a broad range of options for moderate outlay. Here's some of my favourites.

Re: Too Many D*** Dirt Pedals

I am the opposite of you guys - I have the same Distortion and Overdrive pedals as always, super basic stuff (Monte Allums DS1 + Bad Monkey), and I feel more inclined to buy a new amp than a new pedal.

I feel like amps give your tone an unmistakable signature.

I feel like pedals' tone is highly dependent on what amp is behind them.

So when I need a new tone, I go amp shopping. I feel like my guitar amp pretty much sounds like itself no matter what's in front of it.

Can't help thinking this collection is incomplete...

Re: Too Many D*** Dirt Pedals

I'd love to collect them, as it's nice to simply have options.

Still, I've boiled it down to two that do the jobs I need...one to be a bit indistinct, so it blends down into the mix well, and one that stands out with much clarity to punch through at other times.

Re: Too Many D*** Dirt Pedals

I like hoarding dirt pedals but right now I've really cut back. I have a Fulltone 69 mk II fuzz that will be on my board permanently.

And I have a Twin Tube Classic and Tweak Fuzz (so far it looks as though they'll be leaving). Nothing wrong with them just not exactly what I want and the Twin Tube is gigantic it takes up like 3 pedals worth of space. Stupid Deal prices were just too tempting and I actually had money. BUt I probably should've just bought a Fulltone overdrive (rto, ocd, or fulldrive) like I wanted to in the first place.

So right now I'm thinking about selling those two pedals and getting a Fulltone Fulldrive 2 Mosfet some kind of cheapish uni-vibe effect (Voodoo Lab Micro Vibe, BBE Soul Vibe, or Lovepedal Picklevibe).

But for a while I had a Vox Distortion Booster, MXR Distortion +, Voodoo Lab Superfuzz, Voodoo Lab Sparkle Drive (keeley mod), Marshall Guvnor, Marshall Bluesbreaker, 3 Boss Blues Drivers (stock-this was my first dirt pedal and I totally bonded with it and loved it and stupidly sold it and my two mod'd versions yeah I'm an idiot-, keeley phat mod'd, and keeley freak fuzz mod'd), Blackstar HT Drive, and hopefully I'm not forgetting anything but I probably am.

I find that more than anything the biggest thing in defining your tone is YOU. Amps, guitars, effects come and go YOU WILL ALWAYS SOUND LIKE YOU regardless of the rest of your setup. That's why even today people still recognize Peter Frampton, Robin Trower, Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, etc even though there gear has changed countless times the player hasn't.

Most decent guitarists are always trying various stompboxes to try to get the holy grail of tone we hear in our sleep. But I think all things define your sound pick, strings (type and gauge), tuning, pickups, guitar itself (how it's setup, how's it's composed, etc), amp/speakers/cabinet, room we play in, how we play, etc.

I think the reason I usually horde dirt pedals before anything else is because of cost, you can get pretty nice dirt pedals for the occasional splurge expense and be able to justify it. I have a lot harder time justifying a $300 wah or a Fulltone Deja Vibe when they won't get used 1/3 as much as I'd use a nice overdrive or fuzz that I can leave on all the time (and yes I usually do leave my dirt boxes on all the time and just use guitar volume to clean up).
