top five compressors

Re: top five compressors

The Electro Harmonix Black Finger is fantastic. It can be transparent if you want it to, but I think its forte is to have it set to some squish with a hint of tube rasp blended in. Amazing pedal.

Re: top five compressors

Now that I am used to a compressor with a blend knob, it is hard to go back. Besides the Vise Grip, I use a BYOC compressor I built.

Ever since this thread started I’m gassing for a vise grip! All of the demos on YouTube sound great.
The Duncan sure calls it a studio grade compressor.
Do you know which circuitry type this pedal uses? Optical?

Ego vs Vise Grip.

This would be a question for Riley. I am not sure. It differs in the sound from say, a Dyna Comp. It comes on more gradual, and isn't so much an 'effect' (although it can be set that way).

Re: top five compressors

For single coil guitars I don't think you can beat the classic Keeley 4 Knob. A truly beautiful compressor. It's noise floor is so low too. For humbucker guitars the new keeley compressor plus is awesome. That blend knob is a huge must for getting the right mix of compression and attack with humbuckers. For me this isn't a big issue with single coils.

I use compressors for sustain as an always on pedal and for taming rythm parts. Compression to me adds a real sense of presence to rythm playing.

I would stay away from the TC Hypergravity. I don't like how it sounds. It's also unrealistically complicated. (TC is having serious quality control issues currently as well. I have TC pedals that I love, but recently almost everything I've bought or tried has needed warranty work or replacement.)

Re: top five compressors

I use a Keeley Limiting Amplifier (GC-2) compressor. Unlike most sustainers that boost the lowest parts of the signal - which adds noise - this design enforces a ceiling on how loud any single part of the signal can get.

This Youtube demo/explanation video by Robert Keeley is admittedly long in length, but man, does it really help clarify and clear up what compression is and the two different design approaches.

+1. This is what I was using. I need the ratio, threshold and make up gain controls or a compressor is useless to me.

Re: top five compressors

I love my tc electronic nova dynamics pedal, it’s got hard stompbox type or softer studio compression, 2 sides that can be run together, toggled between or any combination.

It’s also got a noise gate setting, so I can run one side as a compressor and one as a gate and put one before gain and the other after.

It’s the same compressor built into the nova system and the G system. They can be found for a decent price and work better than most.

Re: top five compressors

by coincidence, i put my compressor recently into the pedal board. Its a Homebrew CPR. I collected it several years ago not know too much about how to use it. I recently used it to get some long sustain with high gain solos

Re: top five compressors

Just to add one more to the list, there's the Maxon-cp9pro+, and they can be had for a modest price with some patience. I've been watching the last few months for one in both nice condition and reasonably priced, and then finally yesterday it happened for final negotiated price of $110 shipped. These pro+ versions often sell used for about half of original price. They're fabulous pedals but not as widely circulated therefore not as "thought-of" when people go on the hunt. Also they require some current headroom when powering-up, so some brick setups don't support them well,,,,,,,but many do, and there's also an easy way to make them work with an "inadequate" system. The whole 9-series line have IMO the best switches (for actually switching them on-the-fly with your foot) and the best battery-access.
