Toronado / Too hot? / Pickup Covers / 59 / Deamon / lil

Has anyone switched out the pickups in their toronado? I like the pickup covers, but I don't like the sound of the fender atomic humbuckers. I'd like to switch them out for 59's probably or Deamons. I have the mini "lil" versions of them in a strat and in a tele and I love the sound. I think I must like that kind of frequency response (see spec chart) and output.

Does anyone know if I can expect a similar sound with the full humbucker size pickups? I think the atomics are too hot? I'm guessing the fact that rolling off the volume on the guitar has little effect (almost an on off effect) is an indication of hot pickups. Also the atomics tend to buzz more then sing.

Also Does anyone know if the pickup covers that came with the atomics will fit over a 59 or similar humbucker?

I will probably switch out the bridge for a 59 and the neck for a fernandes sustainer.

im guessing that the covers will not fit. if you want covered pups, order them that way

i took your advice (well at least partly) and put in a seth lover at the bridge. i love the way it sounds, but i knew the fact that it wasn't wax potted was a gamble. i play somewhat overdriven and distorted and pretty loud. i hoped it wouldn't go microphonic, but it did... so, and i know i will freak a lot of people out with this, i wax potted it... and it still sounds awesome. i wish i had a 59 to compare it too. i have a feeling i just turned it into a 59... this site (http://www.guitarnuts.com/technical/electrical/index.php) is where i learned how to pot pickups.

beebe - Are you saying that your Toronado came with Fender atomics? I played one last week at GC and it had Duncans loaded. I liked the sound of them and am trying to find out what type they are so I can use a set for a Strat project. Any idea what kind of Duncans come in a recent model Toronado?

I have a 2003 Tele HS with an Atomic II HB at the neck, and I love it. I was really surprised at how great this alnico 2 HB sounds, so I left it alone and put a Duncan STL-2 Hot Tele lead in the bridge to keep up with it. I haven't tried the bridge version of the Atomic II, but I suspect it would be hotter than I'd like. The Seth is a great pickup. I suspect that potting it made it more like an APH, although probably a bit darker and thicker sounding.

You can get the 59 with covers as well as most duncans that have one lug and one screw side. I have also seen covers that can fit over humbuckers without screw pole peices as well. All you would need to so is lower the screws until the cover fit properly and repot the pickup so the cover doesn't rattle.
