Tortex Wedge

Re: Tortex Wedge

Is there a physical size difference between the Wedge and Standard or TIII picks?

Bryan Kehoe from Dunlop (and M.I.R.V.!) says the TIII is the standard with a Jazz point, and the Wedge is a slightly wider standard with a slightly pointier tip. I like subtle changes like that.

Gotcha. I've used Standards for years, usually .73 or .88 but have started using .60 recently. The jury is still out on those though since I've been using .73 for so long.

I know what you mean. For the first few years I played, I just used whatever looked cool, which ultimately was a neon green pick Billie Joe Armstrong from Green Day was using. Next trip to the music store, I picked up a pack of Tortex .88s because they were green. Next thing I know, it turned out all sorts of my heroes used those, and I've always come back to them.

But I think I like the Flex .88 better :)

Re: Tortex Wedge

I keep swapping back to and from the 1.0 to the .73. I like Totex right out of the bag, but it gets too slick. The Ultex feels better, but the sharp is not as pointy as the Tortex.

Need to order up some .73 and .60 Ultex I think.

Re: Tortex Wedge

I’ve always used Tortex. I’ve settled on the purple ones but sometimes I think about switching to blue.

As I’ve gotten more precise I find I wish the pick was a little smaller so it wouldn’t flop around so much during economy picking

But then it’s hard to bang out big riffs :(

Re: Tortex Wedge

The Wedges are cool. Wider than Tortex, pointier than Tortex, it as pointy as a Sharp. They’re worth trying.

Re: Tortex Wedge

I've been watching this thread with some keen interest hoping I'm gonna read something that's gonna solve an issue that I have but so far it hasn't happened.

This has been pis*ing me off for ages now (and now that I'm practicing and playing my ar*e off it's started to pis* me off even more).

I use Dunlop Primetone LG Sharp Tip 3mm (https://www.jimdunlop.com/product/477r308-7-10137-00926-4.do) but I'm now really finding that within an hour the nice little point is no longer. I love the attack and crispness of a new pick but I cannot replace picks every other day. And sharpening them doesn't work either i.e. they change shape eventually. Also tired of having to clean off the black powder off of my strings and guitars all of the time.

Surely in this day and age there are picks that will not wear like the above???

I've spent a lot of time looking on the Internet for stuff like Titanium picks, Kevlar picks, and what not but so far I've only found custom made picks and don't know if I can trust what I'm reading (some of them ain't cheap by any stretch of the imagination). Also: I've not found any in this thickness.

Any ideas or recommendations??? I just want a guitar pick that keeps its nice point for a little while at least.

Contact BlueChip picks and see if they'll make you a custom shape. It's going to be way more than you'd ever considered paying for a pick, but if you were to literally replace a Primetone every day for a month, you'd save money with BC. Their picks are made from Meldin, which is obscenely expensive (something like a couple grand for a 12"x12"x.5" piece), but they don't really wear. I have one of their picks I use for mandolin, which cost $35. I think they go up to $50 when it gets past 1.5mm.

Wegen would be another good one to check out. They're not quite as durable as BC, but significantly less expensive (approx $5-8 each), and I've had good luck with custom picks from him.

If you're not interested in spending $5-50 per pick, you're not going to find what you're after.

Re: Tortex Wedge

Thanks very much.

Exactly the info. I was looking for.

I’m pretty good at not losing or misplacing things so I got no problem shelling out for a pick or three that will keep its “edge”.

Will update when I get some.

I like these Dunlop picks (only type that works for me) but they’re just not lasting and as you say: will not be long before they’re costing more over time (and we get nailed badly with shipping too and I cannot get them locally so it’s a no brainer really i.e. just didn’t know what to buy hence my asking).

Thanks again.

Re: Tortex Wedge

No problem. Meldin, the material BlueChip uses, is really interesting. It doesn't wear from playing, but it's really easy to file if you need to adjust the shape. I bought the one I have over 2 years ago. I got it unbeveled, and decided I preferred the beveled edge. In no time, I easily got it how I wanted with a nail file, and it hasn't changed since.

I been using gravity picks. I have yet to wear one out, and at $5 are something I dont mind trying.

Re: Tortex Wedge

Thanks, guys; I just spent sixty bucks on picks. :laugh2:

Re: Tortex Wedge

Everybody is only talking about feel, wear and durability.
For me, the tonal affect between pick types is HUGE. Some simply sound better than others.

No doubt. Thats why I like to experiment

That’s pretty weird if you think about it??? Have you tried to see what happens with that old carpet sharpening trick???

Anytime!!! LOL!!!

For me anything that feels right, doesn’t wear, keeps its point, doesn’t clog my strings with black powder, and doesn’t leave the same black powder on my guitars sounds good tonally!!! LOL!!!

Only joking (above) i.e. you are quite right of course. My problem is that I just cannot get it on with thin picks and when you start getting to 3mm thick or more then your choices become pretty limited.

P.S.

Just Googled Meldin. Appears to be some type of supa dupa polymer or plastic mixed with graphite??? Self lubricating too so should be pretty smooth on strings not???

Hmmmnnn...

Just took a look at BlueChip Picks. I see two there that could be similar to my Dunlops. According to their numbering/sizing system the thickest is 2.5mm which should alright. The corker though: the thick picks cost $75 ex. shipping!!! You do realize that an Invader only costs around $90!!! LOL!!!

Try the razer from gravity picks. They play way thicker than their width. Nice grip and slice right thru too, and I like their tone.

Re: Tortex Wedge

I can highly recommend V-Picks (and Gravity, too!) Once you find the right shape and thickness, they are amazing. The acrylic material helps with grip; I don't think I've ever dropped one. I use the 1.5 mm Red Rockers, but I've bought several of their picks up to 4mm. I've used the 1.14mm standard Tortex and Gators for years but the V-Picks have become favorites. I've also used Primetones and Ultex, but I prefer a sharper tip.

Another to try are the stone picks from Stone Works. EXTREMELY fast across the strings, and they have good grip. Beautiful too!

I picked up a pack of Flex .73 this afternoon. From what I can tell they simply are a little more flexible than the Standards. Not a bad feel actually.
