Totally Unexpected NGD: ‘98 Ibanez RG7421

For a pittance, I acquired an RG7421 earlier this evening. Just got done ripping it apart, wet sanded a few nasty spots on the back of the neck, oiled the board, polished the frets, and tweaked the truss rod a bit. I’m waiting until it settles a little before hitting it again tomorrow, but I think it’s gonna setup really well.

Had one of these about 15 years ago, but I don’t remember the stock pickups sounding halfway decent. Regardless, they’re getting upgraded. I REALLY wish Duncan made the Nazgul/Sentient set in neon green, as the green on black Universe has been on my list for 20 years. As such, probably gonna look at D Actovators or something from DiMarzio. Yes, it’s extremely important to me that they’re neon green :)

I’ll post pics tomorrow, but, spoiler alert... it’s gloss black :)

If I was willing to spend $300, I’d go with Bare Knuckle, since they do offer goofy colors. Maybe I’ll go EMG and paint them.

Yea you could paint EMG's. Be sure to use a white primer to make the neon brighter and pop more than it would just going over the black plastic. Wont take much more than a light even coat. Id prob clearcoat them for longetivity.

I really like Duncan's neon colors and I was tempted to get a neon yellow/pink zebra Full Shred for my Road Flare Red RG but in the end I went with a custom color pink/yellow Evolution for it.
Nothing wrong with black, I think they take to most colors quite well actually. Getting a neon DiMarzio cliplock strap also? I used my red cliplock but I was going to get 1 of each of the Neon straps which were yellow,green, and pink and use 1 piece from each strap to make a tri-colored one. Then make two more straps from the rest and give them away, but I never did. Dreams...

RG7421 = 7 string

Also, though this guitar is a hard tail, Duncan’s funky colored pickups aren’t trem-spaced, which is 9 kinds of absurd.

Kinda missing the target audience, huh?

I don't think there is a difference on 7 string pickups is there? BTW, congrats, I have 7620 that plays insane, every time I pick it up it's just wow, I love this neck. Would love to do a custom FR (Ibz tele-ish) style body in korina for it, but having trouble finding someone to make it.

7620/21 have DiMarzio Blaze stock, 7420/7421 have Ibanez pickups.

Might just go with green bobbin toppers for now. As far as stock pickups go, these aren’t awful.
