Trade Ibanez RG321MH for Yamaha Pacifica 604W

Hi guys,

This is a quick one:

My Ibanez is on sale for the same price that I bought it used (200CHF still in mint condition), I like it and I play it often; I play it as much as my other strat, but it is out there in case someone “bites”. I could use the cash for another purchase later down the road. I bought the Ibanez because I wanted something with a fixed bridge and 24 frets; I like the brixed bridge and the 24 frets are now irrelevant to me.

Today someone asked me if I wanted to trade my Ibanez RG321MH for his Yamaha Pacifica 604W. I have no idea about this guitar (or the brand), I know some Pacificas are starter guitars, but I think there are also others over $1000.
My other strat is also a HSS (I’ve turned into SS), also with a tremolo (I’ve blocked it), although mine is a standard 6-point tremolo while the other is a 2-point Wilkinson VS100; also rosewood fretboard, the Pacifica has 22 frets and compound radius (as I’ve read), as opposed to mine of 21 frets and single radius.

What do you think? Is one of the guitars “better” than the other? Or with “higher” resale value? The other Strat is my first guitar and its getting a makeover, and until I finish it, I need at least two guitars, one to play one while the other is “under construction”.

Thanks a lot guys! All advise would be greatly appreciated!

Cheers,
Walter

If I was you and the Pacifica is in good condition (play it first!!) I would certainly trade it for your RG. The Pacifica 604W comes with real great hardware: a Wilkinson VS tremolo and Sperzel locking tuners, that's fine stuff. The models I have seen were all nice guitars. I'd look into it and go play the guitar, if it's good I would trade the RG321 for it! ;)

Assuming both guitars are stock, the Yamaha should have higher resale value. 600 numbers are (at least currently) the highest in the Pacifica series, while 300 numbers are low (maybe the lowest) in the RG series.

On paper, the Yamaha would be the "better" guitar, being top-of-the-line (or close to it); Sperzel locking tuners, like those on the 604W, aren't typically included on import guitars unless they're close to the top of the line. Every 600 series Pacifica guitar I've played has been of high quality, though I haven't played the 604W.

However, whether the Yamaha is the better guitar FOR YOU is only for you to decide. These guitars are very different. The 604W, as you know, has a vibrato bridge and 2 single coils, very different from the HH fixed bridge Ibanez. Then there's neck feel, which to me is make-or-break for guitars. Only you can decide which guitar is more confortable for you. You'll want to play the 604W to see if feels and sounds good to you.
