Traditional vs mod'd Gibson wiring.

If I got it right, My LP has the tradional wiring where in the "both P/U postion" either vol. contol acts like a master Volume and you can re-wire it so each vol. control controls only it's own Pup. This mod. makes sense to me. Seems like you can blend the 2 pups. Will I loose something with this mod? Why did Gibson go with that original scheme?

Re: Traditional vs mod'd Gibson wiring.

You won't really "lose" anything, however, there is a slight quirk to the "other" way. As you turn down the volume, you'll effectively be lowering the resistance, (raising the "load"), on the pup.

For example, say you're using 500k pots. With the volume on 5, it'll be like you have 250k pots. (I'm assuming linear pots here for the sake of making the example easier.) With the volume on 3, it'll be like a 150k pot.

However, dual-volume control guitars have been wired this wire for years, so apparently, its not a huge concern.

That's not quite right. Yes, if have the selector switch set for the "middle/both pickups" position and then turn one volume control to zero you will kill both pickups.

But you can still blend both pickups and make one louder or quieter than the other.

Each volume control still affects mostly the pickup it is assigned to.
