Transporting amps

Hi all.

I've started taking my AC15C1 to gigs at my local bar (first time today). The journey was uphill and fairly rough (the power LED has already fallen inside the amp for example), so it seems I will need to invest in something more protective than just a trolley.

Flight cases look nice, but ludicrously expensive (though I appreciate a £150 flight case is better than a £150 repair bill) and likely far too heavy for my uses (would double the weight!). Is there a lighter alternative to flight cases for the AC15C1 as I'm not seeing any?

Re: Transporting amps

Are you walking all or part of the way, then? Paved?

Re: Transporting amps

50LBS isn't much until you carry it far with one hand, and finding a way to get it high on the back might be tough with it's size.
good luck

maybe an old large luggage bag would at least pad it well and allow you to sit it down and rest whenever needed without getting the amp all dirty
or get one with wheels

I was thinking a hard case with wheels. You gotta save some energy for the show, and your amp will thank you for carting it ‘round in something that offers real protection.

Two big recommendations:
1.) With wheels, make sure they are fairly wide set. This promotes stability and stops it tipping over sideways.
2.) Make sure the handle is up high enough that you don’t have to reach down to it. You’ll be a lot more comfortable walking upright.

Re: Transporting amps

If a Vox AC15 is too heavy for you, you might want to add a little protein to your diet and maybe try doing an extra couple of pushups in the morning....

Well that depends if it's just a half-mile, or a several mile carry. It is almost 50 LBS so it's heavy enough to need some hand-switching along the way if it's miles.

I kind of agree though, it's not like we're talking about a tremoverb 212 lol.

Re: Transporting amps

carrying an amp any real distance sucks when you are walking. if you keep doing it, youll get in better shape for sure.

as far as the amp jewel falling in... amps dont take physical abuse well. if you baby them, they will last a long time. if you dont, expect to have issues

Re: Transporting amps

I have a Rock 'n Roller cart and it is a lifesaver. Rather than use a flight case, I have Tuki padded cover for my amps, though I travel to my gigs via car.

Gator and SKB make light(er) weight amp transport cases.

Re: Transporting amps

I dunno...In 25+ years carting gear in and out of bars and the like I've never really had an issue with stuff falling apart. That includes, mics, cables, PA amps, PA speakers, guitars, guitar amps, effects and mixers. I take reasonable care but I don't treat stuff with kid gloves either. If gear can't be picked up and put in a trunk or back of an SUV driven to the gig, used and gotten back home a hundred times without issue it's crap gear. So if after one gig my amp has an issue, I don't buy a case for it. I take it back to the store and ask how many other things are going to fall off the thing before I get my money back. I'd expect more from an amp with the coveted Vox name and so should you.

Re: Transporting amps

I would also be interested in protecting my equipment from cosmetic damage that wouldn’t be the manufacturer’s fault.

Re: Transporting amps

Sounds like you're on foot. If so, I'd get a backpack frame/rack that's designed to pack out elk/deer/moose meat.

Re: Transporting amps

Sounds like pretty rugged terrain. Will you be able to hire a mountain guide?

Re: Transporting amps

you need to hire a group of dwarves to carry it for you. Just don't hire ones named Sleazy (he'll rob you blind, screw your GF or BF, and maybe screw you too), Grumpy (because the first time it feels heavy, he'll say **** that **** and drop it), or Sleepy ( if he stays awake long enough to make it ontime to lug your gear, he may fall asleep carrying it, causing the cranky dwarves to say **** that **** and drop your amp)

:smokin:

The gig had better pay well to have me beat up my gear period .

I've seen it happen in the name of RNR where a person's gear
is messed up one way or another while getting there - playing
there or leaving there .

You have to respect the time you took to buy your gear man period .

I've a beefy 60 watt tube 12X1 - no way am I packing that into a place
that could get it hurt .

If it's a questionable gig I don't risk it at all .

For jams and other stuff where it's an outdoor and sketchy I have a
portable that sounds great with my FX modeler/looper .
:reporter:
Nopers on lugging my good heavy stuff unless there is a reasonable numeration
being offered , like a Roadie etcetera :arms: , dinner , a few nice ladies to hang with
: party: .
