traveling with a guitar

I want to bring one of my axes on vacation with me to hawaii, but i have never traveled on a plane before with a guitar. It sounds like i might be able to take one as a checked carry one, which means it would go into a closet in the cabin. or i could just check one as luggage. I havnt decided if i want to take my acoustic or my electric with my marshall mini amp. the advantage to the acoustic is obvious, but my case is huge (it looks almost like a cello case) so i would probably have to send it down below, which frankly has me worried... aslot - do i need to either loosen or take off the strings because of the pressure changes? are there other concerns i need to worry about when flying with a guitar?

Do not check your guitar into baggage.

Musical instruments are exempt from carry on restrictions... but many airline workers may not be aware of this. I would suggest you contact the airline ahead of time and tell them your intentions. They may want you to check in early so they can approve everything.

I've travelled many times with my bagpipes and have never had a problem carrying them on other than the odd looks from the xray people seeing all those pipes in the case.

i called hawaiian air, and it looks like i am going to have to stow it below. so i am going to loosen the strings and put it in my big a** case. do i need to worry about a humidifier or any of that mess?
