Traynor YCV50 owners.. Tell me about the cleans

Hey I'm thinking of picking up a Traynor YCV50 blue with a YCV40WR extension cabinet so 2 Vintage 30 speakers running with this amp.

Was wondering what the clean channel is like... Is it thick? Loud? what is the headroom like ?

Thanks guys I know there is a few owners here so I'm looking forward to hearing your input

Re: Traynor YCV50 owners.. Tell me about the cleans

Everything about the amp is awesome. The cleans are great and the overdrive is great. You need the boost to get a decent amount of distortion for liquid soloing, but it takes pedals well. The amp benefits a lot from replacing the stock tubes. It comes with a V30 so you don't need to worry about upgrading the speaker. I wouldn't buy a blue unless you get one dirt cheap because I see guys trying to sell them for $600-700 years old. You can get the black version new for that price. The extension cab is fair, but neither the extension cab or combo cab have enough depth to push out much bass. The combo is open-back and a very nice economical size, but because of that might benefit from a speaker with a bit more low end perhaps. The YCV50 can be real nice and creamy or almost aggressive as a Marshall. It doesn't sound as bright as a Marshall to my ears, but has a real nice balance of warm Marshallesque tone and cut. Too bad they don't have it in a head version.

Re: Traynor YCV50 owners.. Tell me about the cleans

The real question here is what kind of guitar do you play? Strat guys usually love the YCV50 (I had the Blue as a LP player) as a dirty amp because the gain is thick. LP guys love it as a blues amp as I did. Some people hated it as a clean amp with an LP like some of my former bandmates. I liked it... didn't love it though. I'm a tube amp guy. I loved the YCV50 as a rock amp, sheet was badbutt. However, as a cleans amp with an LP it was a bit muddy. With a strat, however... shone brighter than the Bethlehem star.

If you don't like the cleans, you can swap out a single resistor on the board and put in 6L6s to replace the EL34s. The YCV50 is basically the same amp as the YCV40, just biased for EL-34s. Running it with the extension cab does offer better bass response too.

FWIW, I mostly play HBs and liked the cleans on the YCV40 better so that's the one I got.

EDIT - Dude, you live in Toronto! Head to a Long and McQuades and rent one for a couple nights to see how it works for you.

Haha good point!! I should go check my local longs and see if they have one used for rent!

Re: Traynor YCV50 owners.. Tell me about the cleans

Well I'd have to disagree. I have played both amps and the YCV40/YCV40wr do not have "better" cleans. If you want more Fender-like cleans, the YCV40 would be a better choice. However, as far as how good the cleans are for each respective amp, they are both very good. It's not like the YCV50 doesn't have enough headroom. The whole thing about strat players vs. Les Paul players (all due respect to SnakeAces) is just not relevant in my experience. Whether you get the YCV40 or WR, I think makes a difference however. I'm more familiar with the WR, but from memory, the 40 has a cheaper speaker and less gain. I'm not sure about that, but I'm sure that kind of information is available on Internet.

Re: Traynor YCV50 owners.. Tell me about the cleans

They sounded better to me with the guitars I use. Of course, YMMV . . . and it doesn't really matter either way as the amps have very similar circuit layouts, the same transformers, and you can put either 6L6 or EL-34s in with a simple resistor swap.

Re: Traynor YCV50 owners.. Tell me about the cleans

yeah the YCV80 I tried and really liked had seventy 80 speakers which I usually hate so I'm sure the Vintage 30 is a huge upgrade

Just got it... Turns out the owner replaced the speaker with a Eminence legend :( but I got a cab with a V30 so I can always switch the speakers around
