treble bleed mod - problem

hi all

Im an electronics idiot, but trying to learn..

i did the treble bleed mod, but heres what happened
(2007 japan jazzmaster)

when i roll off the volume it does nothing until 1 or 2 on the dial
where the volume dies almost instantly

i probably dont have the right caps
as i bought them in a general electronics store
and the fella was a bit clueless

what is this symptomatic of? sound like the wrong cap?

are resistors directional?

i'm trying to establish if it is the wrong cap
or what went wrong on me.

Re: treble bleed mod - problem

"when i roll off the volume it does nothing until 1 or 2 on the dial
where the volume dies almost instantly" looks like description of linear taper pot used as vol pot on guitar.

What did you put as a treble bleed ?
a. just a cap
b. cap an resistor in parallel
c. cap and resistor in series
What are the values of cap (and res, if b. or c.) ?

NO, resistors are not directional.
Read this, at the bottom of the page you'll find about treble bleed :

Re: treble bleed mod - problem

it was the parallel version
100k reisitor . 0233 cap (i think)
as i mentioned i would highly suspect the cap is wrong

i was hoping someone could confirm this though

Re: treble bleed mod - problem

You might have
1) used a too low value resistor (100K shouldn't be too low, though) and/or
2) used a too high value cap (the cap is .0233 what? is it a large cap?).
3) The soldering's not right and you somehow bypassed the volume pot. Check if the soldering's clean and there's no connection between the two hot legs of the pot but the treble bleed mod.

This same thing happened to me recently, except I just did pickup swaps and now my volume pots have their whole ranges squished into the 0-3 range. When I swapped the pups one thing I did do was solder the switch wire and the pickup Hot wire to the same lug, as opposed to the Hot on one lug and the switch on one lug like it was before. I haven't gotten back into the guitar to see if putting them on two different lugs will fix it, but you may check to see if yours is wired the same way.

Yeah, I think your cap value is wrong. Most TB mods I've seen use .001 or .002. My Peavey used 220 picofarads. (Thats .00022 uf.)
