Trem Arm Broke In The Block. Any Tips On Getting It Out?

Re: Trem Arm Broke In The Block. Any Tips On Getting It Out?

This happened to me, and me and my dad took a pair of pliers and carefully turned it out.

Yeah, mine broke off way down in there though. Nothing to grab onto.

The superglue thing might actually work. I superglued a piece of metal to the back of a watch once when I couldn't get the back to loosen to replace the battery. I had to use some channel locks to loosen that sucker, worked great, snapped the chunk of metal off when I was done and away I went.

Yup, gonna try the superglue thang after din din tonight. I shall report back.

Re: Trem Arm Broke In The Block. Any Tips On Getting It Out?

You guys get Pratley glue up there right?
Why not use the Pratley metal glue to glue the rod on? It's been holding a bulldozer suspended 10m off the ground for decades now :) it's a much stronger bond and since you don't need the little piece of trem it's expendable seeing as it'll be permanently fixed to the rod.... The Pratley metal on metal adhesive is the stuff!

I suggest this because A) I've had superglue snap off before, meaning its not as super as people think...
And B) I once superglued my hand to a cutting board because I was paying more attention to a girl walking past me instead of my work....
The second part isn't of any importance... It just really hurts to pull your superglued hand off something....

First off, your username is amazing.

Ok. Yeah, tried the superglue. Snapped right off.

That Pratley stuff sounds awesome! Gonna try to track some of that down. Thankya sir.

Re: Trem Arm Broke In The Block. Any Tips On Getting It Out?

Hmmm interesting. Dunno if that exact method will work as I leveled out the broken piece to drill straight.

BUT I forgot about cutting a slot and try to flathead it out. That might be my best bet.

Re: Trem Arm Broke In The Block. Any Tips On Getting It Out?

Why didn't I think of that? Someone's got to clean up the metal shavings. :P

Nah, you just suck at life :p

J/k, that can happen, though on most trem blocks the bar breaks directly at the end of the threads (or very rarely at the actual 90° bend, ususlly on ultramegaübercheap trems), and that`s usually high enough to get a small easyout into (I assume you weren`t using one designed for an engine block or Steel railinng size screw).

At this point, Drill press and rethread for larger bar or new block.

OMG, am I agreeing with Jerry again? HEY MEPHISTO! Do YOU KNOW WHERE MY ICE SKATES ARE? :saeek:

Re: Trem Arm Broke In The Block. Any Tips On Getting It Out?

i've replaced a lot of broken screws in a variety of machines. If the arm broke it could be because its soft metal. If this is the case get a small screwdriver that will fit in the hole and try to back it out while pressing down firmly on the broken part that is in the block. If it broke off flush you may be able to tap a groove into the piece that is jammed in there & back it out that way. But you may not be able to do this so using an easy out may be the only choice you have

If you mean my username then thanks :)

But yeah as far as I know Pratley is a South African invention that's kinda become a household name down here. The stuff is Pratley WondaFix and as I said its holding a full bulldozer suspended off the ground since the 80's :) I'm sure it's distributed internationally though? The Pratley steel glue will probably allow you to stick the trem arm back to the broken off piece in the hole and unscrew it... In fact you'd probably be able to use that re glued trem arm again :D

And no, before anyone asks, I'm in no way associated with the company... I've just used the product with great results

Good luck with the trem problems

This is what I'm gonna be doing here tonight. I've got a narrow chisel that will make the groove.

Aside from that I've been busy rockin' out on the guitar in question with the new American strat bridge King IzzO))) sent me. ****'s soooooo much better than the stock bridge that I had on there. I'm seriously thinking I might keep the guitar now. It just sounds miles better than it did. Thanks so much again dude!
