Trem Cover on a Strat...do you remove it?

Re: Trem Cover on a Strat...do you remove it?

I've been watching this thread and I must say, it's a good laugh.

ErikH: I started the thread as a way of surveying how many forumbro's left the trem covers off, and for what reason.

Also, I read in other threads recently that it could change tone. I don't agree, but I'm never very certain about my knowledge with this type of thing (e.g., the value [and cost] of tone caps, top wrapping, etc.)

Dave, I'm simply pointing out the silly notion that removing the trem spring cover changes the tone of the guitar. Nothing personal against your surveying. :beerchug:

I leave it on. For years I kept it off but 2 of my 3 Strats have it on. Why did I put it back on? I was tired of hearing my belt rubbing against the springs, which are also dampened with foam. Franky never had one to begin with.

For those who have theirs on does the material that the screws are made of affect the tone? I heard brass screws improve sustain especially on the truss rod cover but then again doesn't removing the truss rod cover help the open strings ring more? j/k

There's an option where they recess that plate? However impractical it may be I'm hoping someone comes out with a trem plate that slides out of the way just for the geeky sci-fi factor. It doesn't have the make the Star Trek door noise though.

Is this the point where I should regret ever having started this thread?

i normally keep the trem cover on for one reason.... i stuff foam in there to stop the springs from ringing out... i don't like that spring noise when i hit the strings hard...

Same here, I tape a block of foam to the inside of the cover but there are 2 or 3 that I leave undampened on purpose. They still have their covers, though.

An additonal bonus is that my belt buckle likes to get caught on the inside lip of the cavity when there´s no cover, so that gets alleviated as well. ;)
