Trembucker vs Humbucker

Is there really that much of a difference between these? I was looking at the difference in coil distance measurement from a Trembucker to a Humbucker and it seems like such a small difference.

And second, technically is a Trembucker designed for a guitar with a double locking tremolo or does it work equally well with a vintage style 6 screw and/or 2 bolt Fender American Standard style trem?

Re: Trembucker vs Humbucker

It's about the string spacing of the bridge, not the type of bridge.

I use Trembuckers/F-Spaced in my fixed bridge guitars, as they line up better with the strings.

Some people say that it's just cosmetic, but if that were truly the case, they wouldn't exist. If adjusting screw height and pickup height makes a difference, I'd have to imagine that the pickup string spacing plays a part in the overall sound as well.

BTW, F-Spaced meant Fender Spaced, and Trembucker meant Tremolo... so it's based on the string spacing of any tremolo bridge. ;)

Re: Trembucker vs Humbucker

And a few years back Gibson changed the angle at which their tuneomatics are mounted, thus allowing trem-spaced pickups to align perfectly under the strings, while standard-spaced pickups were too narrow.

Er, the angle at which the bridge posts of a T-O-M are drilled is with respect to the top of the body of the guitar. This detail has no bearing whatsoever on the width spacing of the saddles within the T-O-M.

The precise alignment of the strings over a T-O-M saddle is determined, firstly, by string tension and, secondly, by a notch that will wear in the upper edge of each saddle.

Individual users can deliberately file their own notches in brand new T-O-M saddles to establish the string spacing of their choice. Just don't go so wide that the E strings want to roll over the ends of the frets.

Hmmm so could you help me out and tell me if my PRS SE custom is supposed to have an F-Spaced pickup?

This is a regular spaced JB

We can see that the E strings aren't pretty well straigth over the poles. I'm curious now...

*Yeah sorry for the crappy webcam picture...

Re: Trembucker vs Humbucker

Yes, your strings would line up better with a TB/F-Spaced pickup.

Re: Trembucker vs Humbucker

From what I understand, there is no discernible difference in tone quality between a humbucker and a trembucker though.

If it's that important that your strings line up perfectly, then go for it. Otherwise, worry about your technique and practice some more. :D
