tremelo picking

Re: tremelo picking

Start slow! Use strict alternate picking. Try playing just one fretted note. Pick up-down-up-down. Hold the pick at a right angle to the strings, and make sure you're holding on tight, or it's gonna go flying. Using a metronome is a good idea, too. You can start with it at about 120 bpm. Play 4 notes per click, until you have it mastered, then go to 8, then 16. Then try doing the same but moving your left hand in time. Once mastered, start increasing the tempo.

Re: tremelo picking

I second the above, but don't hold it too tight. IMO having a relaxed wrist and a grip that is firm enough to keep your pick in place, but not so firm that if asked to a person could not easily remove it from inbetween your thumb and first finger.

Re: tremelo picking

Lol, holding like a girly man would deffinatley equate to picks flying everywhere

Re: tremelo picking

im learning now aswell...
i find the hardest part is that you have to clip the strin with the very tip of the pick, i mean the VERY tip. otherwise it takes to much effort to pluck the string, it slows you down and it sounds crappy beceause you hear the pick scraping the string.
do you rest your little pinger on the pickup?
also (if you want to get fast) you must have al the movment in the wrist, you cant go picking with your whole arm, way to slow!
the way im learning is the traditional, start very slow, get faster-slowly!
if you pick a million notes (same fret!), youl find you will be a lot faster at the end. you will also discover by yourself what is stopping you from getting to full speed..

Re: tremelo picking

Another little trick is to angle your pick so that it is no longer parrallel with the string (hard to explain) e.g. the flat part thatyour thumb holds is facing you normally but face it away. This creats much less friction making it possibe to trem pick on one string.
But don't try and use it as a substitute for alternate picking as its really only a ony trick pony :laugh2:

Good advice.

However I just saw the Slayer Reigning Blood DVD. Those guys play incredibly fast, for practically every song. Anyway, Jeff Hanneman plays his "pedal" riffs/tremolo picking with his whole forearm. It's amazing to watch. Not that I'm recommending this technique, but it obviously works for him.

Re: tremelo picking

Do you guys anchor your pinkie on the guitar? I have a habit of anchoring mine in the cils of my bridge pickup.
