tremolo pedal recommendations

Hi guys,
Can you please recommend me a tremolo pedal that would enable me to do that "how soon is now?" effect? I never had any experience with a tremolo pedal before so I don't know if I can achieve that kind of sound with cheap trem pedals like danelectro's mini series.

Thanks,
edgie

Re: tremolo pedal recommendations

I like my Boss TR-2. It works fine for me, and has a good range of control. Many people don't like this box - the most common complaint concerns a volume loss when the effect is engaged. If you're one of those who doesn't like it, there is a simple mod to fix the problem that's documented on the web.

Like all Boss boxes, it is not true-bypass, but I'm not in the camp that worries too much about that. Since Boss boxes are indestructible, you can safely buy used ones off eBay to save a bit of money.

Re: tremolo pedal recommendations

Boss pedals don't need to be true bypass; many of their pedals are less noisy than actual true bypass pedals. I have the Marshall Vibratrem. On the tremolo mode, it provides a little bit of a compensatory volume boost.

Are there any good square wave trems? Ones that do a good start-stop stutter effect?

Thanks for your input guys. Will take a look at all of your recommendations.:)

Re: tremolo pedal recommendations

I didn't test a bunch of tremelo pedals or claim to be an expert, but the Guyatone VT3 is small, inexpensive and noise-free. My only complaint is that there is a small volume boost when the pedal is engaged.

Re: tremolo pedal recommendations

The guyatone is a nice little pedal.

The VT3 can be modified to eliminate the volume jump.
The pedal uses a variable gain op amp in the output stage.
By adding a small trimmer pot to the control input of the chip you can change the volume of the pedal when engaged

Re: tremolo pedal recommendations

All good and well...but that specific effect you're after is actually a bit more cunning. What Johnny Marr is reported to have done there was have two same amps, both with tremelo (probably those fender ones). He pre recorded his guitar part, and then sent it, off tape to the amps. Each tremelo speed was twiddled until a chance fluke sync issue made that magic.

But i still think a nice temelo and lotsa reverb can get close. I sometimes use my tremelo and delay pedals together, with similar "time" for some odd hit and miss shuddery antics. Nice, but you better be recording, cause trying to re-do it! Ha!

I use the cheapest tremelo available, i'm sure. A Behringer stompbox. I mean really, it 's a tough effect to screw up, so i entrusted them. Normally behringer stays well out of my signal. It has a wave shape setting. Cheap. Volume drop when engaged!

PS, the Smiths were wonderful, yo....

Re: tremolo pedal recommendations

Here comes V!N again with a DIY recommendation: the EA tremolo. It ramps up relativly slowly and ramps down relativly fast. Because of that, it has a very vintage vibe to the sound.

Re: tremolo pedal recommendations

The Marshall VibraTrem I have does a perfect square-shaped tremolo wave. One tremolo pedal that I really like also is the Electro Harmonix Pulsar.
