Trey Anastasio's Pickups?

Does anybody have any idea on a close match for Trey Anastasio's pickups that were in his main Langedoc 1990-1996?

paul has said they were 59's before. with a compressor and two tube screamers you dont need hot pups at all

Re: Trey Anastasio's Pickups?

Duncan 59s are used now and have been for a while. Not sure if they were are early as '91. Ive heard he used schaller golden 50s at one point early in his career. But you could dial in the early tones with the 59s for sure. I know Paul modifies them slightly to make them hum cancelling when tapped/dropped and i think he also rewinds the bridge a little hotter for what he decided was a better balance.

The schallers are pretty hard to find but i think you can order them from germany. A very close copy are the stew mac golden 50s but honestly i think the duncans are better than both. Unless im wrong, he switched from a mesa to a heavily modded deluxe reverb around 96/97 along with the new koa languedoc which had the 59s. My bet is you wouldnt hear too much difference between the schallers and the 59s through either rig but you would hear a lot of differences between the mesa and the DR using the schallers or the 59s.

You dont even really need the 2 tube screamers from what ive seen. At least the way he is running it now he has one screamer with the gain cranked all the way which is always on and gets all the control from his volume knob. This runs into another TS at a much lower gain setting which is only kicked on for some really crazy parts and then into a ross compressor. The compressor is now set much lower than it used to be as after trey quit using the ross when lost it, he decided he liked the nuance control he had better. Fans got together and bought him another ross so he put it in his rig but at very low sustain settings...ie, almost not on.

Re: Trey Anastasio's Pickups?

This is a pic of his screamer comp set up from 2009. That plus whichever amp is way more key than the pups. And as i said, that cranked TS9 is almost always on, you can tell by the insane amount he plays with the volume knob that thats how it works. With that set up you can turn the volume knob almost all the way down and still maintain volume but get really clean tones.

Re: Trey Anastasio's Pickups?

Thanks for the info. A little more digging and I also found out that he used Schaller Golden 50's at first and then switched to 59's modded by Paul L. I have 59's in my Les Paul and am crazy about them. Maybe I'll seek out the Schallers just to have something different in my next guitar.

Re: Trey Anastasio's Pickups?

Treys sound in the 90s seems so warm and full when he plays rhythm. Could this be because he basically always had one of his T9 overdrive pedals on?
