Tried Voodoo P90's and Fender DH-1 pups [review]

My LP is in the shop and so I played two friends' guitars last night: a boutique "Monty" LP Jr copy with Voodoo P90 pups (each rated at 10k) and a MIM Fat Strat, which has a 16k DH-1 bridge bucker. I ran both guitar through my plexi RI, w/vol @ 3 and 12db attenuation, which gives you enough to engage feedback with full guitar vol (no pedals in the chain btw).

Since the LP is getting a JB installed, I was curious to hear how the also high output DH-1 would perform. Rhythm tones were so-so but with full ax volume, it just screamed. Lots of sustain, good edge of feedback tone, but to my ears lacked the vintage vibe (you pretty much heard the pick-up and no guitar - wonder if the JB also lacks transparency that you get with a 59). Anyway, leads were still cool (and effortless) on Crossroads but I could not commit to this pup full time.

As for the Monty, the bridge P-90 performed extremely well, and provided an excellent vintage vibe that was crisp, focused and tight - just like if you could thicken up your telecaster a little bit. Perfect for blues and classic rock, sustain and thinckness lacking, but for non-buckers, this was one of the best sounds I've heard (nailed Authority Song riffs). Also note that with equal settings, the P90s were 30 to 40% louder than the hotter DH-1.

The MIM fat strats do not have the DH-1 at the bridge from the factory. I have a DH-1 from an american fat strat and it measures 8.30 ohms not 16 ohms. The DH-1 is not a high output pickup. It is made to mix well with single coils. I would guess that you are most likely talking about the Fender Atomic humbucker. They are around 16 ohms.
