triple coil pups, the holy grail?

Re: triple coil pups, the holy grail?

yeah. and acutally, if you find any of these guitars that were actually played, most people modded it to fit a regular humbucker.:scratchch

Very true. I have a Ibanez 540 P triple coil and my idea initially was to convert it with a reversable mod as to not affect the resale value to a normal humbucker. I wasn't about to drill holes for a regular sized humbucker ring, and didn't want open space if I kept the original ring so I never tried another pickup even.

The pickup was made or designed by Dimarzio for Ibanez. It seems like a F2 humbucker fused together with C2 with small hex poles that are domed like mini Invader poles instead of the regular slugs on a C2. I wonder if they ever marketed or had an OEM single coil like the third coil here by itself. I'd probably be one of the few that would want one.

very, very nice guitar btw. how is the tone on that? can you select different coils in anyway?

Re: triple coil pups, the holy grail?

oh, and since 1 coil hums, but 2 coils cancels hum, will 3 coils induce hum again?

that is awsome how does it sound? is it split coil? is it suited for metal?

Re: triple coil pups, the holy grail?

Suited for metal but I don't care for all three coils on at once. I forget the switching the first mini switch was on/off/on IIRC and the other one was a coil split. I haven't played it in years and probably only played it twice. I bought this as a collector piece mainly.

Here you can see they actually have 2 separate baseplates. Like I said I wish they made a single coil with hex poles like that third coil. The only one with adjustable hex poles is a Dimarzio SDS-1 or the single coil in the Jason Ellis Squier Stagemaster guitar.

Weird thing is even in a Ibanez Jem the single coil is the odd pickup out as both neck and bridge pickups have hex poles and the single coil has slugs. Ruins the whole look for me imo. I wonder why they never used this pickup in a Jem if only for aesthetic reasons.

believe it or not i'm trying to build one as we speak. its not going so good though. these magnets are a b*&^%

Re: triple coil pups, the holy grail?

Looking at the above picture, it is probably a single bobbin from one of their humbuckers, as normal single coils have a longer bobbin, and the appearance of the single coil looks identical to either bobbin on the humbucker. Still I wonder why they never marketed a single coil that was in effect a single bobbin off of a humbucker just mounted on a plate with a magnet underneath the poles.

would it really change anything i mean wouldnt it still be a single coil pickup.
well i guess youd get a tone change.

Re: triple coil pups, the holy grail?

a friend of mine has a Bartolini pickup that is supposedly a triple coil - it is the same size as a regular humbucker (it's all enclosed like an EMG). He's never installed it - so the sound is a mystery for now...

give me number i want it!

Re: triple coil pups, the holy grail?

OK. In my illustration, the hot and middle coils are mini-bucker sized coils and thusly both together make up the same size as an actual minibucker. The other coil is the exact same size as one coil of a hotrails or cool rails pickup. This form factor is the same size as a standard humbucker is and yet still has three rails. This means that noone has to alter their standard humbucker guitar and can use a three rail pickup in a standard humbucker ring or pickguard. Given the use of standardized pickup coils, existing flatwork and existing coil winds can be used to make a prototype.

Yes, it will. I asked Seymour himself this question once. Odd-coil numbers will hum.

Hey, why stop at three coils?!!

Looks to me like if you don't like the pickup and want to convert it into a player, you could just stick a normal 'bucker in there and a Strat type SC next to it. That would fill up all the space and sound pretty good I think.

I'd put one of the switches as on/off/split for the bucker, and on/off for the single.

Re: triple coil pups, the holy grail?

The problem about all this is the magnet's field.

Putting in more magnets changes everything.

Leaving it at one magnet gets some coils out of whack in the field.
