Hi guys,

Got a copy of questions here. I just ordered a Warmoth neck for a Strat project. It's a maple neck with an ebony fretboard. I plan to finish it with tru-oil, and I have some questions.

How much oil is needed to finish the neck? I will probably buy some of the Birchwood Casey oil, and they have bottles in 3oz and 8oz. I will probably just get the 8oz, but in your experience/knowledge, would a 3oz bottle suffice?

Also, should I apply the oil over the ebony board? I've read that some people apply it over rosewood boards, but I don't know about ebony.

thanks!

3 oz is more than enough and no you do not finish the ebony. Apply one coat of oil with a cotton cloth, and let it sit over night. Then buff with 0000 steel wool and repeat.

I normally do 3-5 coats on a Warmoth neck, and 2-3 on a neck that has been sealed.

yeah, as mentioned you dont need to finish the ebony with the tru-oil

however, you should use lemon oil or guitar honey on the ebony fairly regularly as ebony is quite brittle and dries out really easily.

I finished the whole body on my VM Studio with Tru-Oil. Put on 10 coats and only used less than 1/3 of the 3 oz bottle.

3 oz is plenty :D
