True bypass pedal mods

Hi there, I have a Vox V-847 wah pedal and a Boss floor tuner that i want to get true bypass modifications done on both. Can anyone give me any information on where i can get parts and know-how to do this myself? Is it hard? Or should i get a qualified tech to do it? Thanks guys, any info on this subject will be greatly appreciated.

Re: True bypass pedal mods

That was helpful. does anybody know what parts i need and where i can get them? Thanks

Re: True bypass pedal mods

Smallbear Electronics for the DPDT to make the wah true bypass. You should have the rest (wire, solder, necessary tools).
Leave the tuner alone. It's not worth making TB. The bypass buffer in the Boss pedals is about as good as it gets when it comes to non-true bypass pedals. In fact, having at least one pedal with a buffered bypass is a good thing.

Re: True bypass pedal mods

True bypass is probably the most overrated gear feature of all time IMO.

In most circuits, yes. When it comes to wah pedals and others that use a similar bypass circuit, the MXR Phase 90 is another tone sucker, then true bypass really helps. If you're making your own, it's much easier to wire it up with true bypass than to build in a buffered bypass circuit (Boss style) so it comes across as practically a necessity when in fact it's not absolutely necessary, it's just easier.

Re: True bypass pedal mods

True bypass is also responsible for that POP you hear when switching some effects.

My main beef with it is that people assume true bypass = good, without really understanding what it means and what the pros and cons are.

Re: True bypass pedal mods

Cap discharge is responsible for the POP, not TB. That's easily fixed with a 1M resistor to ground at the input and output before and after the circuits.

You're right, some people don't know what it means other than it's a thing that booteekers use as a selling point. Everything has it's pros and cons, it's a matter of weighing it based on your needs and setup whether it's worth it or not.

On a wah it's not though! Wahs suck tone away bigtime! :13:That pop you hear can be taken care of by putting a 1 meg resistor in the right place to shunt that to ground...

Funny we both said the same thing right at the exact same time buddy! Scary! :laugh2:

Re: True bypass pedal mods

Erik, John, any wattage work best?

The only reason I like True Bypass is because if my 9V dies I can switch off the pedal and keep rockin.

Re: True bypass pedal mods

Just get some 1/4 watt 1M resistors and wire them on the input and output jacks from the tip lug to the sleeve lug (hot to ground). That should eliminate any pop.

I've noticed that the pop is more prevelant when there is an electrolytic cap on the output of a circuit rather than a film cap. Electro's generally hold more charge since they are bigger caps.

Re: True bypass pedal mods

Thanks guys. I will leave the tuner alone then, but the wah sucks tone and i definately can't live with that, i need a TB done to it.

Re: True bypass pedal mods

I don't run anything before my wah and I still made it true bypass.
My Phase 90 was a tone sucker until I put a buffer on the output jack. It was a tight fit but it works and I didn't have to cut the PCB.
