Truss rod adjustment fears

I adjusted my 1st guitar truss rod and it didn't go so well so now when I have dead frets or fret buzz I just use heavier gauge strings. LOL

Re: Truss rod adjustment fears

Adjusting a truss rod is not as voodoo as a lot of companies make it out to be. As long as you're not stupid and go cranking away on it

Re: Truss rod adjustment fears

Yeah...that's not the way to go about this.

You got lots of play before anything will 'break'. Or take it to your local shop. We used to tweak truss rods quick for free for most customers (i.e. If they come into the shop fairly often)

Re: Truss rod adjustment fears

My luthering skills are limited but I can pass along what I was told. "Back the rod off about a little less than a quarter turn, then go slow small bits at a time." Seems to work for me.

Re: Truss rod adjustment fears

Makers provide swiss-knife type alen keys and screw drivers, and user manuals and provide nominal specs for relief and actin height, but then decline to honor a warranty if one person has used the provided tools to adjust his guitar. Maybe that's what frightens ppl to do their adjustments?

Re: Truss rod adjustment fears

small adjustments at a time then let the neck settle. the neck will move right away but it will subtly shift as the wood adjusts to the tension. i seldom move the truss rod more than a 1/4 turn at a time, sounds like you over adjusted

Agree, small turns do a lot. See what changed and if you need more. A lot of times you don't. Moderation the key, you can't do any damage if you take it easy. I think the most I've ever had to do was a total of a half turn, and that's in setting up dozens of guitars over the decades, new and used. You also need to decide if you want a perfectly straight neck or a slight inbow. BTW, string gauges shouldn't be chosen for your playing style and preferences, not to remedy neck issues.

Re: Truss rod adjustment fears

I let the neck settle at least a half an hour before making another turn on the truss rod. I also shake the guitar lightly to help the settling.
