Truss rod or fret level?

i have a guitar I am dialing in so I can sell it. (sniff sniff) I got her set up real groovy but noticed its fretting out on either the second or third fret on the high strings. (cant remember now as Im at work) Im guessing the since its that low on the neck, it may be a fret issue instead of a truss issue.?? I figure truss issues would be more toward the center of the neck..? I tried raising the bridge and its fine all over the neck otherwise, but when I fret a note on either the first or second fret, it hits the next one. fix?

Thanks!

Re: Truss rod or fret level?

do you have a way to check if those frets are higher?

It could just be a truss rod thing. might need a wee bit more relief in the neck.

could also be a nut slot issue.

i dont have any formal way to check frets. Nut is a Floyd clamp. Ill put a straight edge on the frets tommorrow and if all looks good, Ill dial in some relief. Clockwise or counter? Also have to look at the wiring cuz Im getting almost no sound from the neck pup..

with neck bow, the lower frets are the first to have buzz effects.

Re: Truss rod or fret level?

How can the nut have to do anything with fretted notes?

you are right, it wouldn't create buzzing forward of the fretted position. I was thinking of something else when i said that - one of my old guitars had a low nut slot and when played open it would always buzz around the 2nd/3rd fret. Not the same as what OP said, but yeah, I was absentmindedly thinking of that.

guess it's not really applicable here anyway since the nut is a Floyd.

You know you have 6 (or more) straight edges already available in any guitar, right? They are called "strings"... lol

"Point" the neck at your head (head close to headstock), look "down" (towards the bridge) at the fretboard edge, and compare its curvature to the absolute straightness of the nearby string. It'll be pretty obvious if you have a back bow (more likely in your case).

i hear you + i lied. Nut is always a suspect, a too high nut might lead the setter for zero relief and low action and lots of buzzing!
I liked your music man over soundcloud!

Yeah, I was thinking it would be middle of the neck first, but I see your point. What's kinda funny/ironic is that Ive been messing with guitars for years, have had dozens come thru my hands and do all kind of work to them, but have NEVER tweaked a truss rod. I once had an accoustic that needed a truss adjust, but I took it to a tech.

true

Well, mystery solved. I put a coupla spins on the truss rod and the prob seems to be fixed.. Thanks all for the help!! I am no longer a truss rod virgin!! haha

Re: Truss rod or fret level?

Youch man a couple entire spins all at once? Generally I turn it a 1/4 to 1/2 turn let it sit for 24 hours. It takes time for it to move.

no, not entire spins. the wrench would only move a tiny bit cuz of hitting the strings tween the nut and the keys. so I turned it from string to string like maybe 2 times

Re: Truss rod or fret level?

Good deal I was wincing badly think abiout that neck moving a huge amount overnight and starting new issues. Cool Beans !

Re: Truss rod or fret level?

Checked it today and its awesome. You had me alil worried that I had overdone since I didnt give 24 hrs before making the second adjust.. Alls well.
