Truss Rods?

I was just wondering what truss rod brands people prefer when building a neck? I am currently at the stage where i am considering my options for current and future builds. There doesn't seem to be much price difference between brand name ones and no name china-man type ones.

Here are a few i have found which look good.

Re: Truss Rods?

I prefer double action rods but will use a compression or u-bar rod (fixed or adjustable) if the customer so desires.

Double action and u-bar are by far the easiest to install, compression rods require you to actually know what you`re doing instead of just turning on the router and following a template, regardless of whether you`re installing them "from the top" the way Gibson does or "through the back" like on most Fenders. On the flip side, many prefer the warmer tone that most necks with compression rods have. I personally feel that`s a bit of unwarranted corksniffery, but I do acknowlegde that there is a tonal difference.

It just gets a bit embarassing when somebody wants ss frets, maple on maple on maple, a floyd, and then suddenly starts drinking Kool-aid when it gets to the trussrod. ;)

Re: Truss Rods?

+1 on the double action. And a word of caution on carbon fiber reinforcement-WEAR GLOVES and a MASK! The micro splinters are deadly. Check LMI for both.

I hear Charvel is using Carbon fiber in their necks as well to help eliminate dead spots and improve stability. I also hear their using it to build Guthrie Govans new prototype from them which looks promising.

I used to buy them from Stew-Mac or LMI, but will be making my own on the forseeable future for greater flexibility and personal control of the final quality. No idea what "brand" they were per se.

I will not purchase products made in china or allow them to be purchased on my behalf for reasons that don`t need to be laid out here, so I cannot comment on them. That is the one thing that my customers have to live with, I will not use products in my guitars from companies or countries that I boycot, because I don`t pay money to perpetuate what I consider oppressive regimes and /or shady business practices. I refuse to sacrifice my morals for any amount of money. ;)

Re: Truss Rods?

Agree with Zerb 100% on the dual action. People who say it kills tone have simply never played one. Have it on my first guitar I built, and it can be a pretty warm guitar.

Re: Truss Rods?

Are the ones Warmoth use Dual action? I have one that adjust at the heel and on the side and so far I have had no major problems except a some what dead spot on the 12th fret G string but I think that is because I ordered one with a thin wizard profile neck.

Warmoth uses both depending on the specific neck style.

The rod you have is a Gotoh double action with a side adjusting mechanism. Never used one, but to be honest I don`t trust anything that puts a small gearbox inside the neck, simply because Murphy dictates that it will screw me over eventually. ;)

I should have called them up to order mine and tell them, NO SIDE ADJUSTING TRUSS ROD! I HATE the look of the thing, and never even use it anyways but use the main rod.

?? Not sure how you mean this.. is the side adjusting rod adjustable both fron the side AND the butt headstock? I always thought only from the side ....0.o

Well me and Murphy ain't exactly on good terms but if he does show his hide ill just replace the neck. Hopefully with a true temperament fretboard this time.

Re: Truss Rods?

Thanks, but I already know what a truss rod is, I kind of figured that would be pretty obvious by my other posts in the thread :D

My question was specifically regarding the gotoh side rod being adjustable from the side AND end or not as another poster implied, and the side adjust is not even mentioned in that link much less my simple yes /no question answered. :beerchug:

Oh my bad I thought they talked about it in that one but here is the link talking about the side adjust. But it is Gotoh like you said. http://www.warmoth.com/Guitar/Necks/SideAdjust.aspx

Re: Truss Rods?

^^ AH, yes, thanks, that actually does answer my question perfectly, Mercí :beerchug:

I actually always thought that was a complete system, only now do I see it`s just a little doohickey that gets put on in addition to the nut. ;)
