Truth And Lies About Installing Emgs..

Re: Truth And Lies About Installing Emgs..

****, i have a cap in between my tone pot and my volume pot. but i had to INCREASE the distance with a wire.. because the cap LEG isn´t enough to reach the tone.
since those pots are pre wired from factory , and my guitar has a larger distance between the pots, i had to do that. do you think the error is there?

Re: Truth And Lies About Installing Emgs..

No, as long as you soldered both ends neatly, that should be fine. Are you still having the same problems as before? I'll start working on the new schematic for you.

Re: Truth And Lies About Installing Emgs..

I looked at it again and it already is fairly simplified, but I did add the red for the quick connect wiring.

It's pretty straight ahead...wire up the jack/pots as shown. Then connect your quick connect to the pickups. each one has two wires, red and white. Connect the reds together and connect those two with the red from the battery.

You should be left with two white wires, one for each pickup. You want to solder the braided portion of the wire to the top of the volume pot. Be VERY careful here. This can be tough to solder and if you don't get a good connection, you could either have excess noise or not the full power. Be carefull that you don't apply too much heat and burn either the braids or pot. What I like to do is apply a little solder to the bottom of the braid before you start. Then get something so that you can secure the braid down while you are soldering. Apply the solder/iron and let the bottom heat up so the braid touches the pot, then keep it there until it's secure. I also like to use a little wire across the top of the braid so that it touches both sides and comes into contact with the pot. Solder all that down and you should be fine.

Then, since you are using only one volume control, the end of your white wires will both go directly to the switch. You want to wire each one to the very end Tabs of your switch. Then connect the tab to the left and right of the ones you just soldered the wires to. Example, lets number the tabs from left to right, 1 2 3 0 0 4 5 6. Wire one of the white wires to #1. Then connect tab 1 and 2 with a small piece of wire. Wire the other white wire to tab 6, then connect 5 and 6 together. Then, you need to wire the first tab from the volume control to the switch tabs 0 and 0.

The rest should already be connected...I think.

Re: Truth And Lies About Installing Emgs..

I did it, but the switch is inverted and i think that the 81(bridge) Is lacking tone and output. Where's the problem !?!?

Re: Truth And Lies About Installing Emgs..

Thank´s Mont Jay!
itrs ****ing Working, But the 3 way switch Schematic is Inverted .. and some of the emg 81 highs and high middles are lacking presence and punch.. the highs are a bit Thin. could it be the QUALITY of my(BAD) Solder skills? ehehehehehe

Re: Truth And Lies About Installing Emgs..

I forgot to mention that, you can just switch the wires on the switch's tabs and you'll get the proper position.

About the highs...That could just be the normal EMG tone and you aren't used to it :) Are there actually highs present or is it more low/mid oriented? If so, then maybe your tone pot/capacitor is doing something.

How do the lows and mids sound? Good and fairly full? If it sounds ok, then it should be ok. If the entire pickup sounds weak (like if you hit an E chord) and thin, then yes, something in the wiring needs better contact.

Re: Truth And Lies About Installing Emgs..

Hummmmmm let me describe... it seems like the 85 is In full mode, and MAYBE(I SAID MAYBE) the 81 is having some little thin with not enough Sustain in The first 3 strings.
or is it the sound of the 81?
i thought the pickup was MORE output than the Duncan distortion. with MORE tightness in the bass, and more mid growl. and more sustain in the highs. I´ll ask someone to SOLDER them properly, cause i guess my soldering skills are VERY BAD!
Q:/

the highs are a little Bit present, yes, in the overal tone. the pickup reminds me of a JB, but with a fatter overal sound than the jb.
I did some clips, check them out in tips anc clips please mont jay.
Hails.
JP.

Re: Truth And Lies About Installing Emgs..

THE Lows are Good(i expected MORE) and the mids are ok too.
i just expected more punchy, and tightness.
i´ll swap 85 bridge, 81 neck.

Re: Truth And Lies About Installing Emgs..

i didn´t understand the Switch thing you said on your last post. do i need to unsolder it and solder again? or i can turn it(fisically/Physically) and VOI-LÁ? ahahaha

Re: Truth And Lies About Installing Emgs..

the EMGs should be as close as possible to the strings specially the bridge pickup. lower the neck pickup a little bit to balance the volume with the bridge pickup.

Re: Truth And Lies About Installing Emgs..

Hummmmmmm i´ll do that, but i don´t like a pickup too Near the strings because it can cause problems while picking

+1.

I generally run mine somewhere between 1/8 and 1/16 of an inch from the bottom of the string.

Re: Truth And Lies About Installing Emgs..

Humm, thank´s screaming daisy.. BTW did you recorded that clip i asked you ?
try checking my soundclips on tips and clips and see if that is the real sound of emgs.
Q:)
PLEASE.
THANK´S

That's snake oil.

They DO have string pull, about as much as a 59 or so.

The fact they use rails makes the pull a little less warble-inducing but it can still cause problems.

Sorry, I've been really busy the last few days. I tried making one the other day, but I really wasn't too happy with it and haven't had the chance to get back to it.

Re: Truth And Lies About Installing Emgs..

OK man, no problems.
THANK´S
i´m right now going to INVERT the 3 way switch back.
and then, swap the 85 for the 81 in the neck.
