trying out newmetal tone for drums..

Re: trying out newmetal tone for drums..

Message me on Facebook and I'll do a mix for you. They don't call me the king of acoustic drums for nothing. The guitar tone is pretty good, I can tell the advantages of the drum a little clearer.

I feel your pain. This sounds way more natural than my mixes though. I haven't outgrown the compress everything to hit like a truck phase yet

They aren't bad, I was just offering to do a really spiffy mix for you. No-one was yelling.

Bands I produce albums for and radio stations that play them. All I'm saying is I have a knack for getting good acoustic drum sounds.

It's a matter of taste, getting it to hit hard without overpowering everything which lies within the art of mixing. I'll show you what I mean tomorrow.

Well done, I appreciate you catching my tone and not freaking out haha.

While we are on the topic, care to share any insights you've picked up along the way? Either using this as an example or just some basic "stuff I should have been doing from the beginning" sort of thing?

Recording killer acoustic drums is a very demanding and meticulous procedure right from the start. You need to keep things in mind such as the room you're recording in and its acoustic properties, the quality of the drum kit with new heads and cymbals, being tuned correctly and I don't know if it's an ironclad rule but I make sure the kit has been in the tracking room for at least 24 hours before setting it up so that the shells can acclimate to the temp, humidity pressure etc. of the room.

Then you need to take position in consideration. You want as much vertical and horizontal separation between things like hats and cymbals to the snare and toms but not be too uncomfortable for the drummer. It takes some time and trial and error to get the feel for exactly where the mics should be and even where exactly in the room the kit should be. The drummer should have good control over his playing dynamics (when they smash the cymbals and don't hit the kick and snare hard enough, you're in trouble). That's just the beginning with making sure the source sounds you're starting with are on the level. Then you can start making them really pop in the mixing stage (EQ, compression, limiters, envelopers, reverbs and so on). I'm waiting for Joey to send me his drum tracks so I can give it a shot.
