Trying to get a Gn'R sound....any tips!!!

Re: Trying to get a Gn'R sound....any tips!!!

Hello,

I have Slash sig. Alnico II pickups in my guitar, does anyone know what combination Amp & Distrortion pedal would get me close to the Slash sound? Im on a limited budget and cannot afford Slashs signature cabinet and head...im looking for around a 50W amp that will sound good. Plus, does anyone know what type of distortion the Slash sig. cry baby gives and would it be worth buying?

Get a Les Paul.

REAL Alnico II pro pickups. Not any hotter, or any different.

His signature pups are wound hotter and are recent. Everything except recent recordings (his solo album) were done with REGULAR Alico II pro pups

Then i believe he used an mxr distortion, a crybaby classic, and a High-gain tube powered marshall. Im sure a recent JCM or DSL/TSL or any TUBE Marshall will deliver the gain as long as you stick to the overdrive channel and not click over to the "modern" channel. (3rd channel is for chug-a-luggin)

Oh, and you have to play it LOUD and REALLy push the tubes using that MXR.

Plug in, and try to nail his clean sound FIRST. Because Im pretty sure i read in a magazine interview that he doesnt have seperate EQ settings for clean and dirty channels. DJ Ashba HEAVILY rips off his tone in GN'R. If he can do it, it is possible. Just dont complicate your signal chain with more FX. Its in the amp and guitar. He keeps it very simple.

Slash used a Marshall Silver Jubilee 2550, they are pretty pricey but ceriatone builds a sweet copy. You can get the kit for around $400, but you would have to make your head cab.

The last time I read up on Slashs gear, which admitedly was a while ago, he was using 5 heads and 5 4x12 cabs:

2 heads and 2 4x12s for clean
2 heads and 2 4x12s for dirty
1 head and 1 4x12 for Talkbox stuff

He also said he was running a few racks with FX (mainly chorus) and a DBX compressor in each of the clean amps FX loops and that he has a BOSS GE7 EQ set to a mid boost which is kicked in for solos.

I'm not sure this is still the case as the last live rig I saw of his had quite a large pedalboard with a fair bit of MXR stuff on it, but what I listed above is what was used atleast during the later G n R days and maybe even Velvet Revolver, according to the article atleast :)

Re: Trying to get a Gn'R sound....any tips!!!

Didn't you start like 3-4 threads on the A2P's and your SG, I think he took lessons, you can't fault him for that.:laugh2:

Touche, Granted I kept em' all in the same room though. It always good to rephrase the question for multiple threads. This way at least narrow down by giving us more insight to what the OP has already tried so we can help them out a little more. More specifics help out a lot. OP says on a budget, what's that? Seriously what's a budget to you? You don't want to spend more than $500, $1000, ??????

yeah I was referring to his earlier rig with the modded silver jubilee

I totally understand. I just thought it was a good oportunity to rib you about it a little.:biglaugh:

People have also been teasing him a little to much, when he's just having a hard time dialing in a sound, we all have had a hard time before, and it's important to him that's all that matters. Let's just try to be kind.

My kid can nail AFD with a 25.5", $150 Ibby with a $100 Raven RG20 Solid State amp. I can't though.

Bingo! The problem the OP has is not the gear. He is more than close enough hardware wise. He needs to focus on the left and right hands.

Re: Trying to get a Gn'R sound....any tips!!!

Since we are in the pup lounge....

A2P - definitely a component. But I have nailed it with T-Tops (in a Les Paul through a Boss Multi-fx and the clean channel of a Peavey amp).

I wouldn't generally recommend a specific pup - for Slash, yes. If you don't have the exact pup (or even if you do...) play with the tone knob a bit.

I hear a lot of power amp sag in his tone...

***king A. He has soggy bottoms as of late. D:

Re: Trying to get a Gn'R sound....any tips!!!

I think you need to just work on your playing to really nail his sound. It's all in the fingers.

This. Les Paul-ish guitar plus neck PAF-ish pickup with any gainy tube amp will do well enough. But until you learn to work the magic with semi-harmonics off your index fingernail, you won't sound like him.

Re: Trying to get a Gn'R sound....any tips!!!

Here is my comment:

What guitar?

#1 A2P's are better than the Slash sig pups. What do you think Slash ACTUALLY used to get his sound?
#2 For a budget - Marshall AVT2000 50 watt
#3 Basic Crybaby wah.

Then, play with the knobs.

If you can't do it with that, you can't do it with Slash's actual rig.
I wouldn't recommend the AVT because it has no tubes what so ever. I would probably recommend a Peavey Tube amp (a Windsor, Classic 30/50, etc.).

Noted. I was just throwing out the AVT as the budget option. Pushed preamp tube will be spongy just like sagged power amp in that. But no doubt, there are way way better choices - for way way more money.

Common guys - lots of new people out there, let's bring the A game for advice!
