Trying to get the right pick-ups

Hey guys, first let me introduce myself.
My name’s Sofia, I am 22 and I play in a metal band. I am 5’4” and I weight 99.2 pounds. I’m telling you this ‘cos every time I tell someone that I wanna change my guitar pick-ups to Seymour Duncans, he goes “Buy a better guitar first” The truth is I can’t because as I am really tiny and slim I can’t hold a Jackson or an ESP for more than 10 minutes. Right now I own a Peavy Vortex which is perfect in size and weight for my body complexion. But I’d be glad to improve a bit its sound.
Okay so this is my guitar.
60714pea.jpg

It has basswood body, rosewood fretboard and maple neck. Besides, it has Floyd Rose-licensed double-locking tremolo, which I love, by the way.
My band’s genre is… ummm… metalcore? Melodic metalcore? Melodic metal? I don’t know. If you wanna check the kind of stuff that we do go to http://www.masqueofdeath.com
The thing is I play the rhythm guitar and my purpose is to find a bridge pick-up with high gain and a very aggressive sound to play heavy rhythms and riffs. I was thinking of an SH-8.
For the neck position I want a radically different sound, ‘cos my aim is to be able to play clean and warm riffs. Would an SH-2 do the job?
A friend of mine told me that the best choice for my case was SH-11 for bridge position and SH-2 for the neck. But I really don’t know if that would give the desired effect so that’s basically why I’m posting here.
Thank you very much for your time and patience and everything. Keep it metal, guys!

Welcome to the forum.

Metal???

I get confused with "En éste apartado podéis escribir sobre cualquier tema relacionado con"

Re: Trying to get the right pick-ups

welcome!!
i'd try a distortion(sh-6) in the bridge for sharp, agressive rhythms and maybe....
a dimebucker for the neck(? you did say radically different) to me, the sh-2 is anything but radically different. the dimebucker will be bright and sharp, but with a bit or warmth because of the higher output and the fact that it's calibrated for the bridge.

hehe, guess you entered our boards. They're still only in spanish but I'm gonna change that soon, so it'll be in english too.

I think it metal... melodic metal... It's not thrash, obviously, but I really want a sharp and agressive sound for the heavy parts and a warm and clean for the melodic ones.

welcome!!

Thank you very much for answering ^^ Is the dimebucker a good choice for clean sound? Isn't it supposed to be similar to the invader?

Re: Trying to get the right pick-ups

Welcome - nice to see a woman here!

I'd recommend the Duncan Distortion neck and Duncan Distortion Trembucker bridge. The Trembucker will align the polepieces perfectly under the strings of your guitar.

actually, the dimebucker and invader couldn't be more different, whereas the dimebucker is super bright/sharp and the invader is really loose and heavy.

+1 to both things lew said:smokin:

Re: Trying to get the right pick-ups

The Dime won't do well in the neck; it's too hot an has a big low end. For that guitar and the styles you listed, I'd be very temptet to install a PATB-2 in the bridge and a SH-1 or PATB-1 in the neck.

Re: Trying to get the right pick-ups

Thank you guys for replying to my message. I really appreciate it!
I'll try to read more about the pick-ups you mentioned in order to make up my mind... :yourock:

Re: Trying to get the right pick-ups

If you looking at CLEAN Stuff for the neck then the SH2 is good. For the bridge Distortion trembucker. You cant go with what Lew said either..you always get good recommendations from him....

Re: Trying to get the right pick-ups

+1 to a lews suggestions. That man knows his seymours. And i think joceylns reply above, she meant to say "you cant go wrong"

Re: Trying to get the right pick-ups

I certainly wouldn't be putting a Dimebucker in the neck. Or anywhere else for that matter.

If you just want a rythm pickup for the bridge, and want it to be tight and heavy, I'd say the Invader is ideal. For the neck the SH2 is fine although it wouldn't be my choice if you're going to be doing many leads. For clean it's great though.

As for Jacksons being heavy - my Jackson Concept hardly weighs anything. I don't know if it's any better quality than what you have, but it shows you can get lighter Jacksons.

Re: Trying to get the right pick-ups

Duncan Distortion in the bridge and '59 in neck would be my recommendation.
The Invader might be nice also, giving you a thicker tone, albeit a bit less precise than the Distortion. As far as the Jazz is concerned, it's also good in the neck, but I prefer a '59 with a Distortion.

Re: Trying to get the right pick-ups

I like the Distortion the best out of Duncans. the Dime sounds really cool, but was a little too mid scooped for me. The invader is also cool for doom lol. Its really lows heavy.
BTW, you would hate my guitars. I get the heaviest ones I can find :smokin:

Re: Trying to get the right pick-ups

Since you love your guitar and it's comfortable to you, you've come to the right place.
I would go Distortion /bridge - Jazz or 59' /neck. Good luck!

Re: Trying to get the right pick-ups

Listened to your songs good stuff! I think both lead and rhythm guitars would sound great with a TB-6 ( duncan distortion ) in the bridge the SH-2 is always good choice for the neck as is the SH-1n (59n)SH-6n(distortion neck)

Re: Trying to get the right pick-ups

With a guitar like that, chances are you'll almost always be playing metal. Might as well go with a Distortion set, and have it do that one thing very well. Then when funds allow, you can pick up another guitar that will do other things. And so begins your journey... good luck!

Re: Trying to get the right pick-ups

Thanks again for your time... It seems that the most popular recomendation is Distortion for the bridge and Jazz or 59 for the neck. I'll think it through ^^

Thanks for listening to our songs... It's all home-recorded so it sounds a bit ummm... terrible?
By the way, what is the difference between TB-6 and SH-6? Just the dimensions or is there something else?

Thanks again!

TB-6 is spaced for guitars with a tremolo. They're the same basic pickup.
