ts9, ts9dx, ts808

Re: ts9, ts9dx, ts808

Yup its made of plastic, which is why I didnt want one either. It seems cheap, thin and easy to break when I tried one. The sound was quite good though, but I would go for a TS-9.

it seems that you might have the TS7 confused with another pedal because it's definitely NOT plastic... have you really tried it? unless of course, you tried the defunct soundtank version:

Re: ts9, ts9dx, ts808

The TS5 is plastic and the TS7 uses a very sturdy metal case with cool locking knobs that press and click up and down...Both the TS5 and the TS7 use the same cheap plastic switches that get intermittent after alot of use...I Like to take a TS5's board and mount it inside of a good case and use swithcraft jacks and a better switch, though I've been using a modded TS5 now for about 5 years w/no problems!

The pedal shown is a TS5 and it came out after the first version TS9 went away and before the 2nd "reissue" of the TS9...Both the TS5 and the 2nd 1993 reissue TS9 use the Toshiba chip and both pedals lack the JRC4558D on the original TS9s...

Re: ts9, ts9dx, ts808

I can't count the number of times I wished my TS-9 went to "11" Still it's a great pedal. I just always thought A DX would make me happier. In the end I kept the TS-9 AND got a Stamps Drive-O-MAtic....which RULES!

I Like the DX model, but only after I do several changes to these..The changes makes the entire pedal and all of it's positions better...

My favorite TS type circuit after the tweaks though,is the Voodoo Labs Sparkle Drive...The tone is more natural and the extra "clean" knob it has,is a great add on!

Re: ts9, ts9dx, ts808

I have a '81 TS-9 and it is one of my favorite pedals. I also have a RI TS-9 but it doesn't sound as good as the original.
Both have the JRC4558 chip too.
My Maxon 808 is supposed to be identical to an original Ibanex 808, but my ears prefers the original.
I've never done double blind tests to prove it though.
Doesn't really matter in the end, as long as you end up with a sound you like. The hardware to get that sound is secondary.

The differences you are hearing are component variance on the pots and the caps and other components to a lesser degree....I've modded close to a hundred Tube Screamers over several years now! In fact almost every model made in the line.

Sometimes things just get better with age also..

This is wrong. The TS7 is definately metal. I see no reason to spend the $$ on a TS9- for the price of a TS9, you can do all the mods you want on a TS7.

Re: ts9, ts9dx, ts808

I just went to GC and got a Zakk Wylde OD and it's kind of noisy. Is there a cheaper AND better (not so noisy) OD you could recommend? Sorry, Not trying to be the thread bandit, just curious. Any comments/suggestions would be helpful as this is my first attempt at using an OD in front of my JSX (It really does a XXX sound quite well pushed, I just wish it was a little quieter). Thanks.:fingersx:

Re: ts9, ts9dx, ts808

Danglin' Fury, I also tried the Zakk Wylde OD and found it to be very noisy too. Years ago I had the Ibanez Tone-Lok TS-7. But, at the time I was using it as a distortion pedal, not just for OD. Just like with other TS-7 owners, my switch went bad.

Re: ts9, ts9dx, ts808

Or just try it stock first.Right Dave? :)

absolutely! find out what you don't like first (if there is anything) and then mod the hell out of it- that goes for guitars, amps, fx, etc...(but don't spend too much money on something you don't like to begin with).

Actually, I like the idea of the TS7 with a better switch...

Re: ts9, ts9dx, ts808

I didn't think the TS9 and 9dx were supposed to have the 4558 chip. I thought the replacement chip in the old days was intended as an upgrade. But my old Boss OD-1 has that chip.

For a replacement of the Wylde Overdrive, try a Boss SD-1. It is Zakk's actual favorite, but he has a deal with Dunlop. The Dunlop is based completely on the Boss with some minor changes, but the Boss is a lot less expensive, and Bosses in general have a better reputaion for reliability.

Re: ts9, ts9dx, ts808

I went on the hunt for a tubescreamer earlier this year for pedal to put in front of my Marshal TSL. I ended up with Maxon OD9, it sounds good as boost or for pushing distortion a little bit harder. I researched all the various model tubescreamers TS9, 808, and the various mods, and ended up with the Maxon. Somewhere i read they are the original makers of the tubescreamer anyway, but it doesnt matter cause it sounds awesome.

Just another pedal to consider. As if there aren't enough. Good luck.

Re: ts9, ts9dx, ts808

does anyone know the MAXON OD808 OVERDRIVE ?

. . . yup, my fav. overdrive that i do not own !!!

That thing rocks big time !!!

The Maxon OD808 & a BluesDeville 4x10 (maxed) - just WOW

Earlier this year, the mag, GUITARIST had some killer samples that came with their interactice CD, and they tested two of the Maxon pedals on the CD and all four of them in the mag !

The Maxon OD808 is the only OD that sounds better (to my ears) than the Balckstone OD :smokin:

Re: ts9, ts9dx, ts808

Hmm, I must remember wrong then, it was the TS-7. IT was the buttons I was thinking of, sorry.

I'm not sure the history of it, but many of VERY knowledgeable people on TS's say the JRC4558 chip can't be beat for the smooth overdrive & apparently it "kills" the TA chip.

Maxon actually ade the original Tubescreamers for Ibanez.

The Maxon OD-9 with JRC4558 chip will be just as good as the Ibanez equivalent but some are fussy and want the Ibanez 1.

Musicians are weird! Lol.
