Re: Tube Amp Doctor

Looking for those EL84-CZs....I could only find them on the TAD site, but of course it costs a whole lot more to ship from Germany.

Maybe I'll e-mail The Tube Store & see if they're carrying them :dunno:

They're in Toronto, right???

Re: Tube Amp Doctor

:dunno:

From what I saw, the design is German & they're made in China.

Maybe I'll just skip it & grab the NOS Teslas from KCA :D

Yeah, probably go that route....Mike's a good egg & is quick with the shipping :bigok:

Re: Tube Amp Doctor

If you look at all of his tubes, he appends 'CZ' to the JJs...'Czech', I guess, even though they're actually Slovakian. AFAIK the only ones that he has the Chinese do for him are the blackplate 6L6s, everything else is the same stuff you can get elsewhere.

Re: Tube Amp Doctor

Im not sure about the TAD stuff 100% I do know that some of their EL84's are very fat and don't fit some amp and I also know that most of them are made in china...

I know mike is selling those NOS Teslas pretty cheep (less that $150 a quad I belive)...I bet they sound great!

Re: Tube Amp Doctor

How can an EL84 be too fat?

The only way I can see a tube being too fat would be if the sockets are too close together (I can see KT66s having this problem), or if they have to fit into a ring base for a shield (preamp tubes). EL84s fit neither of those descriptions.

Re: Tube Amp Doctor

From the Tube Store's websire on the TAD EL84STR

"Note: These tubes have a slightly larger diameter than other EL84 tubes so they can not be used in Marshall DSL201 or DSL401 amplifiers, or reissue Vox AC15 amps."

I know thet B Bent here on the forum had some of them and liked the tone but I also know that he put them in to an amp and had a hard time getting them back out...in fatc I belive he actually broke one!

Re: Tube Amp Doctor

Gotcha, those are the Chinese tubes.

The amps mentioned are ones where the tube sockets are on the PCB and they 'poke' through holes in the chassis. The holes must be too small for the bottles. Some Chinese preamp tubes have that problem too.

Thanks!
