Hey everyone, i'm currently collecting some data for a statistics class, and would appreciate if you would vote on the poll.

Do you prefer to play your tube amp clean or dirty?

*Thanks everyone, and if you could, please vote on the solid state poll too.*

Re: Tube Amps- Clean or Dirty? (Statistics Proj)

I put clean because I play it on the clean channel. I have the gain and volume set so that it's slightly dirty though. That way, I can pick softly and get some shimmering clean or dig in and get some crunch :)

Dirty, of course. :D I like it dirty....

Besides, if I want clean, I can just turn down the knob on my guitar and get a clean sound... You can't do that on the clean channel.

Re: Tube Amps- Clean or Dirty? (Statistics Proj)

I didn't vote because I love both clean and dirty... SS amps have a clinic clear that I don't like, I find it too cold for my tastes.

Re: Tube Amps- Clean or Dirty? (Statistics Proj)

Just because of the way I am, I prefer distortion to cleans, so I voted dirty. However like I said in my post in the SS thread, I also far prefer tube cleans to SS.

clean clean clean....again. I guess once you reach clean nirvana and it suits your playing style, you're hooked. I can't stand power chords/drop D chords any more-too plain and bland chord tones. Nothing beats throwing down some jazz progressions with a good clean amp like a twin-thick, smooth, and loud.....

Can't vote. I like to play clean, dirty and everything in between. The song will usually dictate the tone. Good luck on the poll......Joe

I only use the clean channel. I've owned JCM800's, Boogie MkII and Mavericks, and Ampegs(The one with the key) and never cared for any of them. I much prefer the sound of pedals but would love to find an amp I could use the ditortion channnel on without having to run a noisegate and or Eq to get me where I want to be. The sound I'm looking for is close to an AC30 cranked but then you can't use a delay pedal and most high power amps suck when you use the effects loop. I was happy when modelling amps came out but turned up they don't cut through like a real amp. After some 40 some years it would seem like someone could do something new with amp design. For now I'm happy with my Carvin MTM (EL-34's) as I can crank it up full and get a huge beautiful clean sound without it breaking up as a Twin would, which is great for running pedals in front of.

Re: Tube Amps- Clean or Dirty? (Statistics Proj)

I use both often, so this wasn't an easy decision. Given solid state distortion vs. tube distortion and solid state cleans vs. tube cleans, I'd rather take a tube clean with a solid state distortion than the other way around. Lots of distortion covers dynamics. When you play clean, you want that sag and response that a good tube amp delivers. I've yet to find any solid state clean that "wows" me. There are some that work great for jazz, but they aren't my cup of tea.

CRUNCH!!! I can't wait too throw down my first rock licks through a SLO-100, or Bogner uberschaller, or Peavey JSX, or some mesa boogie, so long as it has tube power section on the verge of explosion! (I voted dirty)

Re: Tube Amps- Clean or Dirty? (Statistics Proj)

I love both, but I play metal the most and Slayer tunes just don't sound quite right on the clean channel.;)

Re: Tube Amps- Clean or Dirty? (Statistics Proj)

What is this strange "Clean" you speak of? Can it be eaten? :D

Re: Tube Amps- Clean or Dirty? (Statistics Proj)

Theres nothing like nice sounding warm tube distortion, very complex and dynamic
