ive finally gotten fed up with the noise and am pretty convinced that the popping noise is from my preamp tubes. i am goign to be changing them along with my power amp tubes. i was wondering. what are the best el34s and 12ax7s for the money. and also, in the preamp section, are certain tubes for certain channels or are they all the same thing and also, what does the tube in the metal cover do?

Contact Doug at www.dougstubes.com he has a knack for matching up the right tube to the amp for what the player desires. Plus, he tests all the tubes and grades them himself. Great guy and great prices..........

I am very happy with the GT 12ax7c's I have in my jcm 2210. Also for power tubes that are el34's check out the JJ el34ls. I have 'em in a jubilee of mine and they are good.

Talk to tube tramp AKA Terry Kilgore, he will voice that amp to a beautiful place. There is not a better 'rock' ear when it comes to tubes and amps. He trys everything he uses and will voice that amp to meet your wants. He is not married to any brand, only what his ears hear. No one come close IMO... Brit amps are an area he is extremely well versed in, as he has one of the best collections of vintage amps that I know of. He plays em all....

thanks for the websources guys. im still not sure about something thing thought. are the preamp tubes grouped by the channel or are they alll used for all channels. and also what is the danger of running the amp with some tubes removed. say the only one el34 instead of two?

Here's the deal with pulling tubes. If it's a (4) EL-34 Marshall, you can pull the outter two or inner two, then switch the ohms selector to half of what your cab is. If you have a 16 ohm 4-12 and you pulled the inner or outter tubes, switch the head to 8 ohms. If it's a (2) EL-34 Marshall, you can't pull anything.....leave it alone.
I'd suggest JJ EL-34's or E-34L's, which have 10% more output. I prefer EL-34's for 100 watters and E-34L's for 50 watters. The reason I don't want E-34L's in 100 watters is because I don't want that much volume and headroom.
My friend Todd is one of Ebay's biggest tube distributors, and he sells a lot of brands. There's nothing like a freshly tubed amp....it's like buying a new amp.

I've had really good results with the New Sensor Tung Sol 12AX7 and Mullard EL34 tubes in my Marshall 2204. I don't care what the purists say ("they aren't correct reissues, blah, blah, blah!") they sound GREAT!
