Tube change on my Classic 30

I play a Peavey Classic 30, and it still has the stock tubes in it, and I wanted to give my amp "new life" so I want to change the tubes.

(I play pop punk. I use a strat with SD JB pickup in it)

I have never changed tubes on a tube amp, nor do I have much knowledge on what tubes to choose from.

I want to be able to have a reasonably clean tone, but at the same time, get a think, punchy distortion sound.

I found a section on Peavey's website:
http://www.peavey.com/products/browse.cfm/action/list/cat/182/catalog/33/begin/1/Tubes.cfm

what would you reccomend to me?

Re: Tube change on my Classic 30

JJ tubes didn't sound good to me in my Classic 30. They made it way too spanky and tight for my taste. The new Mullards were the set I ended up settling for. I've yet to find a set that really makes me happy in the Classic 30.

Re: Tube change on my Classic 30

I've switched to the following set in all of my Classics. Best all around set I've tried so far. This set was recommended to me on the Peavey fourm.

The cleans are great and the overdriven/distorted tones are punchy IMO yet, they can be smooth and compressed if you tweak the knobs.

V1 - Tung Sol 12AX7 Reissue (Mullard reissue works well too)
V2 - JJ 803s (high gain from www.tubedepot.com)
V3 - Sovtek 12AX7LPS (low noise and microphonics from www.tubedepot.com)

Matched quad of JJ EL84 in the power section. You may have to experiment with early vs. late breakup here to make peace with the JJs.

Changing tubes in the C30 is relatively easy. Mine has the tube cage so it makes for a little more work removing that. Just wiggle the tubes in a circluar motion while gently removing or inserting them. Beyond that, just watch those "retainers" on the EL84s - ease them back on. I cracked an EL84 once when the retainer slipped away from me and snapped back on.

Re: Tube change on my Classic 30

Hmmm Ya'll got me curious... I changed my tubes in mine and I just went with JJs. And got what Bob from Eurotubes recommended. They were a big improvement over stock.. If you like the others better?? hmmm I did change the speaker about the same time to a private jack and that made a HUGE diff too..

Re: Tube change on my Classic 30

I am using a JAN Phillips 5751 in v1; JJ 12AX7 in V2; and JAN Phillips 12AT7 in V3. The power tubes are JJs, and I think they are quite alright.

Makes the amp a bit thicker, less gainy, and more clear.

I would agree, but would also strongly suggest you try a 5751 in V1.

Also, what speaker are you running?

Re: Tube change on my Classic 30

I run an Emi Private Jack in mine.

Jamespaul,
Sorry , missed your question.. I dont remember his recommends tho as its been a few years ago..

I really should try some diff preamp tubes.. I have all JJs now and it sounds better than stock and alot more gain, but kinda woolly.

Re: Tube change on my Classic 30

my c30 is getting a lot older and the tubes have had many hours on them... i bought the amp use at least 6 years ago and it's a mid 90's era amp... so 15 years maybe... i should change the tubes soon i guess as i think they are the originals
