tube combo amp recomendations

Re: tube combo amp recomendations

Check out the Traynor YCV line. Many configurations, a really nice Vox like clean, and great OD that's never muddy like the HRD's, is really responsive to tone controls, and has a good sounding boost switch. There are some really great tones in there.

+1, i have the YCV 50blue, great amp, extremely loud if you need to, master volume, which lets you crank up the tubes but keep the volume down, so great tones. love the amp more every time i use it.

Re: tube combo amp recomendations

Yea, i had a 401. Forgot to mention that one.. had an EXCELLENT gain tone, you wouldnt think so with El84s, but man it was incredibly warm! The cleans were just sweeter, very spanky and full but still marshall! Id like to acquire one of those again. Just wish they made a head with higher wattage!

actually they do...and I own one lol. The dsl401 is part of the whole DSL (dual super lead) series (DSL401 Combo, DSL50 head, DSL100 head). I own this one: http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Marshall-JCM2000-DSL50-Head?sku=483128 the marshall jcm2000 dsl50 head. I run that through a 1960a slant cab and it makes a GREAT combination. Add a dual overdrive and you have like 2 more channels if you need them. Just thought I would let ya know, I sure love playing it. I might just get some playing time in before school this morning :)

no no, I mean an actual head version of the 401. The dsl50 and 100 are not the same by any means. The 401 sounds good, the other two sound like ****! haha

Weighing in at 40 Watts and housing two independant, footswitchable channels, the compact, EL84-powered DSL401 1x12" combo is the smallest model of the impressive, 8 member JCM2000 family.

The only difference is that the 401 uses EL84s while the DSL50/100 use EL34s, or so I am told. I cant see how a 1x12" combo would sound better than a halfstack...maybe its just because you cant afford one...

EL84's have much lower output and a much glassier sound with more hi's and mids...However, the EL34 usually sounds bigger, with extended frequency response.

anyway, maybe you didn't think very much about the DSL heads because you didn't turn them up enough...trying out a tube amp head at less than about 4 volume isn't acceptable to make a comparison. Considering the 401 will crank easier, I assume you were able to turn it up considerably more, and thus get more power stage distortion and more compression perhaps. Its not even fair comparing a combo amp to a halfstack...they just aren't the same thing. Cab size does make a huge difference as well. And what guitars did you try the amps out with? If you didnt use the same guitar or a similar guitar you cannot make a proper comparison as well.

edit: just saw this:

Your Rig said:
Guitars: Jackson Black Flametop SLSMG FullShred/FullShred w/Tonepros bridge
Fernandes Revolver Pro 7-String with sustainer
Amp: Peavey 6505+ and Splawn 2x12 cab
Effects: John Spina modded SD-1, Morley Bad Horsie Wah, MXR 10-band EQ (OLD version)
Recording: Line 6 Guitar Port

generalizing from your rig, you are MOST LIKELY a metalhead. Also considering your amp is 120 watts, you probably do not have many opportunities to turn it up sufficiently...unless of course you regularly play venues with seating for more than 500 people...

my main venue right is just over 350 seats and my 50 watter can handle that extremely well.

The Peavey 6505 Plus 120W Guitar Amp Head is great for hardcore or metal bands. 6 - 12AX7s in the preamp add up to even more terrifying punch and mind-rattling gain.
I guess you dont appreciate the nice breakup that a lot of lighter rock guitarists use...for a lot of my playing I am using just a tad of gain...

There are some really great tones in there. The prices have been creeping up as people find out how good they are but they're still very reasonable. And they're very well built for a modern mass produced amp. I changed the tubes and it came with a V30, that was almost 3 years ago and I'm still very happy with it.

+1

I'm also a big Traynor fan . . . great gigging amps, and you can get the matching speaker cab if you need more power.

No need to get personal about someone else's money or audiences just because he doesn't like a certain amp. He just told his oppinion on an amp, and just because you own that amp it's not an insult to your person.
Tone is a subjective thing and everyone has different tastes, there will always be people who hate your amp, no matter how hard you try to prove it's a good amp(or already proven). We all have different tastes so keep that iin mind.

As for how a 1x12 combo can be better than a halfstack: I would never trade my Engl Sovereign for any Marshall halfstack, because it has the tones i want and kicks ass, quite simple(maybe also because the combo is more expensive than most marshall halfstacks)

i actually played a gig with this modle (using another bands amp). it was a very good amp i must say but i want something that can get more agressive distortion sounds.

Re: tube combo amp recomendations

Mission Aurora.

Not exactly a high gain amp by any means. Very clean but there is a footswitchable drive built in that pushes it real sweet. Throw your favorite overdrive in front of it and you're good to go. The 18 watter is incredibly loud. There's also a 35 watter and 50 watter with reverb.

yes, amp recomendations only in this thread please.

bitch elsewhere

Hey Joey ,nice to see you gaain Bro!Welcome Back! :14:

and for the recommendation...Go Laney.I tried the LC30 and that was sooooo awesome!Very loud ,tight enough for heavy riffage ,and a nice singing lead sound!

Re: tube combo amp recomendations

Heck yes, Ive always had 112 combos, and ive never done a gig without one of them on a chair. gets that sound out there, instead of sitting it on the ground and letting the sound soak into the floor.

Exactly ,i am using my vox allways over a chai ,and it works really well!

Re: tube combo amp recomendations

I think the Mesa Boogie combos are perfect for progressive music. The Roadster or Road King is extremely versatile also, but pricey. I guess it depends on how much you want to spend.

+1 for the Roadster.

I've been GAS'ing for one for months. All the reviews I've read say its a great sounding flexible amp. I finally got around to trying out the Roadster head at my local shop a few days ago... great tones, BUT VERY LOUD!!

If you've got the cash, thats the way I'd go.
