tube combo for bedroom use.

hey bros!

what's your recommendation for a small wattage tube combo for bedroom use?

i will be using a spina-modded ds-1 with it and would prefer something relatively fuss-free.

thanks as always!

Re: tube combo for bedroom use.

The only tube amps I'd suggest for bedroom use (ZVex Nano Amp, Doberman) only come as heads. :(

Re: tube combo for bedroom use.

Crate V58 - but you better have a big bedroom, bro!!! 5 watts and only at half-way up on the volume is still goodly loud. But sounds nice with a Spina DS-1 fo sho...

Re: tube combo for bedroom use.

I want a Victoria Champ, wayyyy expensive for 5 watts though. Epiphone makes a good cheap tube amp, also Fender pro junior but its 15 watts

Re: tube combo for bedroom use.

Laney!! LC15II!!. I want to get one, and put a celestion blue in it, and some NOS
or JJ tubes in it....perfect for recording

Re: tube combo for bedroom use.

The crate sounds good, but for 5 watt its really quite loud... not a huge huge differance in volume between my classic 30 and it. Not the best tone ever, but still better then most bedroom level amps.

Re: tube combo for bedroom use.

I know you didn't ask, but did you contemplate purchasing a solid-state amp for the bedroom and using the extra money to get a better tube amp when you do go gigging?

Unless of course, you already have tube amps and are a regular gigger...

Re: tube combo for bedroom use.

Like many have mentioned, 5 watts is still loud for a bedroom...

I picked up a Vox DA5 and that I think is the perfect bedroom amp! Dial it in for a nice, fat, tube-like clean tone (which it can do in a few flavors!) then use the DS-1 for gain/crunch. Or, just dial one of the crunch amps for crunch at full volume and clean up with guitar volume knob. And has built-in effects so you dont have to have use other pedals if you want to play around with say chorus or delay or whatnot. The cool trick feature is the DA5 has a 5w/2w/.5w switch on the back so you can dial it up for solo fun or down to nothing for when others may be in the bedroom at the same time! And the thing runs on batteries so it can be a backyard amp or deck amp or front porch amp or tent amp as well as a bedroom amp! Oh, and they run $130-150 so you have more dough for other toys...

Re: tube combo for bedroom use.

my blues jr. should be showing up tomorrow...i'll let ya know how i think it would work out!?

Re: tube combo for bedroom use.

Pro Junior.

The Blues Junior is really unnecessary for just bedroom playing. The PJ should have a nice clean tone to start you with, and you have the DS-1 for distotion. So yeah, used PJ is the way to go.

Fender Blues Jr

100% agree. i still want to have one, but find it a little bit too expensive.
if somebody in europe sells one .. i'm here :)

there is an alternative .. Laney Lc15 .. also available with reverb

Re: tube combo for bedroom use.

I would also recommend going solid state or hybrid for the bedroom. I think the SS or hybrid would sound better at low volumes. I think you'd still have to crank a tube amp to get the tone you want. Besides, if you're playing at low volumes or bedroom level, would you really be able to appreciate the nuances of an all tube amp?

If you've gotta go all tube, then I'd stick with the pro junior...

Re: tube combo for bedroom use.

thanks for the wonderful response guys!

many of you recommended fender pro/blues jr, a couple of laney lc15/15r and ss/hybrid, budda, crate, dr. z. i am leaning towards the pro jr at the moment since my local dealer have it in stock at a very nice price.

any of you tried the amps mentioned? how do they sound compared to each other?

hoss, do let me know how your blues jr turns out ya?

cheers!

Re: tube combo for bedroom use.

Hey man, also look into the little Epiphone valve amp!! Those things are freakin KILLER TONE and for a VERY cheap price!!! Buddy of mine has one and I played through it and it's just a little cheap box of bliss!

Only $95!!! (I realize of course, you're not in america...but this does give you an idea)
Epiphone Valve Jr.

Re: tube combo for bedroom use.

I love my 70's silverface Fender Champ. Especially since I replaced the speaker with a Weber. My Les Paul Jr -> Bad Monkey -> Champ makes me a happy boy at reasonable volumes.

FYI the only difference between a silverface and a blackface is cosmetic, well and that the blackfaces go for alot more. Grab a silverface for $250 or less and rock on!
