now that i've got an all-tube amp, i'm wondering if i should discard my plans for purchasing a tube pedal (rocktron silver dragon). do you use tube distortion pedals with tube amps? is there such a thing as too warm? if tube pedal + tube amp isn't that great, what kind of pickup do you recommend for metal/instrumental rock?

Re: tube pedals and tube amps

In my experience over 23 years of playing (20+ pro/semi-pro), a tube pedal does little to improve one's sound once you're into a tube amp. And the real reason that is so is that it's the POWER TUBES that make a tube amp purrrrr. Preamp tubes inside or outside the amp are not as important. That's why I chuckle at most amps with a tube front-end and SS back-end. Because why bother?

hey thanks red_label, you're always real helpful and responsive man. cool to know because regular distortion pedals are more affordable! i'm starting to look at the rocktron metal planet. any other ideas?

Re: tube pedals and tube amps

well .... tube pedals I don't know ... but analog circuits most definately, TS' you should definately try the only problem is that to truely taste the TS sweetness you need John Spina(stratdeluxer) to work on them. The only sould clip that really blew me away except Damage Control Demonizer which is absolute best, is this one:

but I am an old metal tube crunch junkie so don't listen to me much.

Thanks man. It's all just my opinion based on years of playing. And there are sure to be others who disagree with me. But I've learned what sounds best and what works for me over 20+ years of playing on stage. There are SO many great OD/boost pedals out there and very few of the best ones have a 12AX7 in them. Most, like the "standard" TS9 Tube Screamer are just diodes and whatnot. And like the Dr. says above, those pedals can be modded to be even better -- and still without any preamp tubes in them.

Re: tube pedals and tube amps

if you have a tube amp what for silver dragon?
a prefer use and choose amp with its dirty chanel....i think its not right way to by a tub and next serch a giood pedal....amp must sounds great without peadls...
also tube pedels may be wicked....just a few of them sounds tubish...and have use tubes in right way...not for light...
