tube power amps

i've been running a multi-effects pedal through my vox amps return jack. it's a 100watt vox that can get real loud, but my pedal doesn't get that lout at full volume. of course there are no controls for the effects loop on my amp, so i was wondering if a power amp might help. if anything, maybe i can get a little more power and a little more warmth from a tube power amp? hell, i don't know.

seems like a waste of a good vox amp, using it like a power amp. why not just go through the front (with the pedal in between the guitar and amp that is)? if you're looking for more of a chorus/reverb/delay usage, why not just insert it fully into the loop and then run into the front of your vox?

it's not like i can turn the gain off. if i did that, i would have to tweak the gain setting for every preset i switched to. why would i want to use the built in amp modeling and effects when i have a kick ass pedal? i just want more power, volume, and warmth and it's my understanding that i can ahieve this with a power amp. does anyone know about this?

a power amp might help, but if you arent feeding it enough signal, nothing is giong to help. Mesa power amps have a gain stage in their front ends, so that would probably work for you.

It seems excessive to have so much processing layered up. Running your multi-effect unit into a power amp is an awesome idea. Some makers of stripped-down tube power amps are M/B, Marshall, Carvin, VHT, and Engl. Also look into the Atomic Reactor; they finally came out with a 2x12 version.

One thing I noticed at Frankfurt was that everything is "modelling" something else. What ever happened to actually "creating" the sound? I think it's worth a try to hit a tube power amp, and just start making tones. If it's too trebly/bassy/midrangey etc, change the preset, right? I would encourage you to try to make tones with a tube power amp and see what happens.

Do you mean running the guitar straight into the tube power amp? That's a cool idea, also. My head doesn't have any preamp controls on it, and I occasionally do that; I just use my guitar's knobs to control the tone. If I ever got an Atomic amp, I would like to just use it with an overdrive pedal, instead of my ToneLab.
