Tube Problem?

My amp crackles. All the time. It's not the guitar itself, as my guitar uses humbuckers and the crackling and the guitar's noise are separate: Playing does not make the crackling stop, and vice versa. This happens on both clean and distortion, and the volume of the crackling is just as loud either way. The cable has been checked: I swapped with another cable AND bypassed my wah to check if it was that somehow. The crackling also does not lower the volume, or appear to interfere at all with the tone of the amp, at least at reasonable volumes.

Thanks in advance!

Re: Tube Problem?

When this was happening on my amp, it was the power tubes. It's just starting again actually, so I'm about buy another set of 'em.

Re: Tube Problem?

I've never switched them. I've had the amp since my birthday last year, which is in December. It seemed a little low on life, but they are stock tubes and I play a lot.

Re: Tube Problem?

Just tried that today. It still crackles. When plugging the guitar into another amp, I could play normally. It's not the guitar jack and it's not the cables. It's either a circuit or tube problem.

Re: Tube Problem?

9 out of 10 times a problem with a tube amp, is a tube. What kind of amp is it?

Re: Tube Problem?

A crappy one. Peavey Vypyr Tube 60. The gold colored version of the 1x12 75 watt Vypyr. The power section is tube. 6L6's. One preamp tube with a 12AX7, acting as a buffer for an analog preamp. A Digital processor built in.

Re: Tube Problem?

Really could be a tube or may be just a cold solder joint. Either way take it to a good tech for service.

Re: Tube Problem?

First, swap your pre tubes around and see if anything changes. If not, change all the power tubes. If not, change all the pre tubes.

If it's still crackling, it could be filter capacitors or something else on the circuit, at which point a tech needs to check it out. But by then, you've already got fresh tubes, so they can't charge you an inflated fee for those.

Re: Tube Problem?

Most likely the 6L6's. Of all the times I had this problems, the power tubes were on their way out.
You could ofcourse first swap the preamp tubes to maken sure, as they're cheaper to replace.
