Tube question for the gurus...Fender 6L6 in particular......

Re: Tube question for the gurus...Fender 6L6 in particular......

Too much bass.?
The first Cat By-Pass cap (C1) in those amps are huge. Try something from a 0.068 to 4.7 mics. You can also try changing C26 and C27. They are pretty big at 0.10 mics. Anything around 068-022 might be what you are after.

Thanks for all the replies...I sure did't mean to start a ruckus. I probably should be a bit more clear. The amp in question is a HRDX III and it has the stock Celestion G 12 P 80 in it.

:scratchch

Joe, isn't that the speaker you ordered?

Stephen...you are quite right..it was a c rex that I put in the amp and it wasn't really any better than the celestion..in fact it had less mids and was too warm.

Hopefully this all helps. I used an HRD for a few years. The twin stack mod and less splashy reverb mods are good and ridiculously easy. If you want tight low end you need headroom - jj's in the power section will fix this. I think your amp has probably done enough work to deserve a fresh set to work at its best if you remember to bias it too. You might also want to consider new preamp tubes, but see how you go with the power tube bias/change first. I think EH would probably be the best bet for you for two reasons: 1. That they can handle high gain and they are extremely low noise. 2. You said you wanted more of an el34 sound - which i would read as being less big in the lows and more firm in the mids. While preamp tubes are not power tubes, it think EH will give you more of that kind of tonality.
Last thing: we all know the stock speaker is pretty lame, but what did you replace it with? I know you dont want to swap it out again due to cost, and i would not recommend considering it at least until you have freshly biased power tubes in there, but it would be good to know, because it may be part of the problem.

I will read up on the links you gave me....many thanks.

The amp is under warranty, but I will give mods a shot if I can't tame some of the flub.

I also tried the trick of turning down all of the tone controls.....it still has sound with all controls on "0".

Re: Tube question for the gurus...Fender 6L6 in particular......

I guess my thinking is rather simple...

Lots of suggestions for a new speaker, cap changes, tone stack swaps, etc however it says early in the thread that the amp was not flubby when it was new so to me those types of tweaks are overkill.

Just get the amp back to where it was when it was new and see what happens...a new set of tubes will do that.

Re: Tube question for the gurus...Fender 6L6 in particular......

BB. Do you have access to an alternative loudspeaker enclosure of suitable power handling and impedance ratings? If any loudspeaker seems to sound "flubby" when driven by your HRDx, valve renewal is probably in order.

From my earlier posts, you may have gathered that I favour the HRDv 410 over the HRDx 112. The key factors in this are the higher plate voltage and the ten inch loudspeakers.

Try your amp chassis through some tens. :)

I am going to try a new set and bias them.

I will try that...excellent idea.

Re: Tube question for the gurus...Fender 6L6 in particular......

a friend of mine, rhett tyler, has a hrd that he replaced the baffle on so he could put two 10's in the amp. sounds great that way

Re: Tube question for the gurus...Fender 6L6 in particular......

A little update...installed a new set of JJ 6l6GCs, set the bias and my amp is back.....no more flab....nice piano-like lows. I also changed out V1 for a Mullard 12Ax7...nicely balanced and articulate sounding preamp tube.

Thanks for all the help folks!

Re: Tube question for the gurus...Fender 6L6 in particular......

Awesome, glad to hear it. What speaker ended up in it, the stock one?

Re: Tube question for the gurus...Fender 6L6 in particular......

Glad you got it back to good. It feels good to have the amp back. With how tubes wear, it's slow enough that finally, on day, we say, "Something isn't right." Then you get it sorted, and you're back to the smile-on-your-face noises.
