Tube rings...

Re: Tube rings...

my genz benz has those on the preamp tubes (stock) and i dont hear them shake so they probably do work.

not sure about those ones

Re: Tube rings...

My take on it is that you could use a simple spring-loaded tube shield on preamp tubes for a lot less dough and spend the $$$ saved on better NOS tubes.

The EF-86 is the only 9-pin that I know you really need to worry about and you can get cheaper rings than that somewhere (quick search didn't come up with 'em).

OTOH there may be magic mojo from the un-obtainium construction of those cone, er, I mean tube rings...

Re: Tube rings...

They do work...but there's cheaper ones on e-bay for way less, and the cheaper ones have a higher heat rating. They'll take a bad tube in a combo and make it workable for a while. There's some tubes beyond heop, but those dampers will get rid of most of the light ringing in good ones.

Re: Tube rings...

You need to look for a picture of the EF86 in the 65 Amps SOHO - that thing is shock-mounted and ringed. GP included a pic when they reviewed the amp, just to show the lengths some people will go to to prevent microphonics.

HOWEVER... as mentioned above, EF86's are really the only tubes that need them. It's difficult to manufacture a pentode in a 9-pin bottle - lots of tiny little pieces.

If a normal 12A*7 gets microphonic, it's simply time to replace it.

Re: Tube rings...

Thanks for the info, guys. I'm not having any problems with my pre tubes (though, my EL-34's are about due for replacement.) I was just curious as to whether it was beneficial in general or just a gimmick. Yea, with 12ax7's, which my amp uses, I'd just swap them out.

Re: Tube rings...

Some of the tube guru's say they may help some if your using a combo amp, but don't feel they are necessary on a head/cab situation.
I use them in my 2x12 combo, don't really know if they have helped, but I don't think they hurt either. I just use the cheap silicon rings you get at the hardware store, or off of ebay in sets.
Myles Rose (groove tubes, Dr Z, Music player forum) says rubber bands will do just as well, and the high-priced ones are most likely indiscernible from rubber bands. I don't think they extend tube life or anything, but probably do cut down some on mechanical noise/microphonics in combo amps.

Re: Tube rings...

meant to say earlier that these are meerly silicone rings, there are players who simply take silicone caulking/sealant and put a ring of it on their tubes, works the same way and costs nothing (if you alrready have it)
