Tube screamers

Re: Tube screamers

I just picked this up today. I own several pedals this guy built and love them all. Can't wait to try it out. Supposed to retain more bottom end than a stock tube screamer with wider mid bump, more gain, cleaner when set up as a boost and delivering more volume.

Re: Tube screamers

Few months ago I got my hands on a Bad Monkey; I must say I'm pleasantly surprised how nicely it sounds, especially for that price (best 25$ I spent on an effect). If it's your first TS then I would suggest starting from Bad Monkey - You won't be disappointed (at least to some limit, because it's a good pedal overall) and if You don't like it, You can easily pass it on. Their rotation on second-hand market is heavy :)

Re: Tube screamers

I've got a bunch of Tube Screamer style ODs including the TS9. My favorite is the Green Rhino. The TS9 is actually my least favorite.

Re: Tube screamers

I kinda prefer the regular buffered version of the TS-9 best. I've got a Bob Keeley modded one as well that's true bypass & some other stuff but since I run such a long chain it helps retain my signal. If I'm only using one of them (I often find myself using both) it's the newer stock buffered one. It sounds terrific through every single amp and fiddle that I own & you really can't ask for more than that!!!

Re: Tube screamers

I modded my ZW-44 to expose an MXR GT-OD at the flip of the switch. My Les Paul has enough crunch without adding the asymmetrical clipping of the Wylde mode, so I go to GT-OD for a bit smoother overdrive. With my PRS, though, the bit of scoop in the Wylde side works much better for rhythm tones.

Re: Tube screamers

I currently run a Green Rhino.. Would like to get a TS mini one day to put on my spare board.

Re: Tube screamers

This might be an unpopular opinion but I hate the tubescreamer and when I got my custom Cornhole built blind testing each component to hear which I liked the best, it's no surprise that it ended up being the antithesis of a tubescreamer. The only thing I hate worse than them are tubescreamer snobs who get all excited over 50c ICs like they have so much more influence on the sound than they actually do.

Re: Tube screamers

I have several TS pedals including a Fulltone FD2 Mosfet and a custom 808 I got.
The one that stays on my board is a Biyang OD8X Tonefancier with the 4458 chip.
It sounds better than anything I have played and I am a Tube Screamer addict.
Best $45 I have ever spent on an overdrive and you can swap out Op Amps on it as well.

Re: Tube screamers

Almost 30 years of playing and I purchased my first Tubescreamer, as in Ibanez Tubescreamer, ever yesterday, a used TS808 reissue. I've had a slew of SD-1's over the years and even modded one to TS808 specs. I've tried them at stores or tried a friend's before but never bought one. I sat last night playing it through my Vox AV30 on the OD1 (70's Marshall) mode and holy smokes. I bought it to use mainly at rehearsals because I don't take my complete pedalboard with me to rehearsals all the time. That might change though.

Re: Tube screamers

When I started out and was young and Naive.. I couldnt figure out the tubescreamer hype at all. Of course I was wanted a "distortion" pedal, so was expecting for the pedal to make it grind and roar... But, I got wiser and realized that the beauty of the TS is not grind and roar, but to push the signal to the next level for searing leads, etc...

Re: Tube screamers

I have a damn near brand new Ibanez Tube screamer Ts9 that you can have. I just removed it from my pedal board. I have the box and manual. I just purchased it just a few months ago and it has very little use on it.
PM me and I'll give you a good deal on it. I'm in Pa right outside of Phila just north if you want to stop by and try it out or just pick it up.

Re: Tube screamers

Funny, I usually use a TS-type drive (Bad Monkey, TS7 or 805) into a dead clean amp.

Same! I just like the mid hump and the touch of compression. It gives me a bit of snap and allows me to be heard in the mix without massively jumping the volume. I even use it at jazz gigs, with the gain almost all the way off; the midhump allows solid body guitars to take on a little bit of the smokiness and roundness of an archtop.

Haha, I do exactly the same.

Re: Tube screamers

I have had a Bad Monkey for 5 years, and i just bought a Green Rhino.

The Monkey stays a lot tighter, crisper, and snappier, but the Rhino has a lot more saturation, sustain and more drive available(Think of the intro to Distant Lonesome Train by Joe Bonamassa).

That said, I'm keeping them both.
