I am going to put new tubes in my Marshall Slash signature and I am looking for some suggestions. I am thinking about going with the JJ/Tesla E34Ls and either the GT12AX7 Mullard reissues or the electroharmonixs 12AX7's. What do you folks think?
Also, I am trying to figure out what tubes are in My Marshall Jcm 900 model 2100. The 12AX7's Say 12AX7 M on them in red letters. There is not a brand name or anything.

Re: Tube suggestions and questions

The EL34L's should give the amp more clean headroom.
Any brand 12AX7 will work in the 900...

I am trying to figure out what brand they are in the 900 since there is no name on them.

Re: Tube suggestions and questions

I'd suggest a mix of all the above. That's what I do.

I like the GT-Ms but they're kind of expensive so I tend to put JJs in the positions where I can't hear a difference. The EH tubes can be great in high gain applications but I find them to be grainy in some amps/positions.

Come on, Help out a brother.

Re: Tube suggestions and questions

As previously mentioned, The Groove Tube 12ax7-Mullard reissues sound great. As far as EL34's go: Svetlana makes some good ones (winged C version).

Re: Tube suggestions and questions

I'd put a GT-M in V1 for sure, maybe another one somewhere, you should buy 2 of them and 2-3 other brands (let say 2 JJ and 1 EH) and swap until you find a great combination. But def a GT-M in V1.

Power tubes ?.... go with Svets.. uh I mean SED winged C logo.

Re: Tube suggestions and questions

Also consider some Sovtek 12AX7LPS's and of course high gain/(and balanced for V1) JJ ECC83S's.

Re: Tube suggestions and questions

The JJ E34Ls are just like regular EL34s, but with more clean headroom, which will provide a tighther more aggressive tone.

For preamp tubes, I my self always used either Highgain balanced EH12ax7s or Highgain balanced JJ ECC83S.

I compared both tubes a whole bunch of times and I personally found the highgain balanced JJ ECC83S to sound tighter and "thicker" tone wise, but I guess that comes from their dark type charasteristics. While the EHs have a bit more High-mids to them, which provided crunchy distortion, but I found them to be a bit more noisey then the highgain JJs, and not as "tight" sounding.

I order my tubes from Doug at Doug's Tubes. Reason I get them highgain graded because I find the off the shelf JJ ECC83S and EH12ax7s to be lacking in the gain, which could possibly affect their tone. I get them highgain graded at 110mu.

gain wise between the 2. They're very similar on how much gain they can provide, maybe the highgain EH12ax7 can provide a touch more gain, but nothing a highgain ECC83S cant provide with a little more volume.

Also, dont let the word dark fool you when people tell you JJ tubes are dark. Its the characteristic they have, but they seem to roll off some of the "harsh" highend off by adding a bit more low-mid to the sound. Its nothing a little addition from the presence control cant fix :)

EDIT - I forgot to add that if you decide to get some JJ ECC83S, get the un-labeled ones from Doug cause they're like $2 cheaper then the labeled ones and sound exactly the same.

Hope that helps,
Duke

Thank you very much for the info, you have been very helpful. I am wondering what amp you play through and what type of stuff you play?

Re: Tube suggestions and questions

Take the EH pre's out of your XXX and try them out. You still have the XXX, right?

Re: Tube suggestions and questions

beware, the svetlana winged c's are a little soft and prone to distortion. Look to find a tube with more headroom unless you like a little bit of mud in your mix with high volume

I had the XXX for one day, it blew up 15 minutes after I got it home so I took it back to GC. I wish I had those tubes to try though.
