tubes glowing blue?

well las night i changed the power tubes for some old mesa 6l6 that i had just to try em and after like 15 minutes of playing the tubes started to glow blue and smelled like burned ?? i just turned it off and and changed the tubes back to the JJ 6l6 and started to work fine again ! why is this? thanks in advance!

It's a little bit of gas in the tubes. Not a real big deal. Lots of 6L6's glow like that when you look in the back of a Fender Amp. Lew

I've heard they glow blue when they run too cold. Anyway, that's what I've read in a Mike Soldano interview.

i was told it's common in 6l6 tubes.


smelling burned, where did you store them? if there was any dust on it, then you smelled that

My EL34's have always had little bits of blue in them. Makes them look pretty.

As long as they're not completely blue (or red), I think you're all set.

It means your tubes are sad. Play "Shiny Happy People" by REM through them and they'll cheer right up.

If there's just little blue thingys flying around, it's ok... if it's really glowing blue... that might be a prob AFAIK... I had an article about that once... but others should have more experience with that anyway...

Anyway, the tubes seem to glow green\blue\violet ONLY when i smoke pot. Very odd indeed.

That's wired too me coz Mike always recommend to bias the amps very cold.. I heard he left some of the corssover distortion
