tubes, its a long shot but...

Looking for Real Life
given my lack of knowlege of them, it merits asking

well, got the 100 on the way, that'll be good for use with pedals

but, well, gotta make use of the 50, and i really don't wanna spend the cash to blackface it, so are there any tubes i could put in there to give it a more blackface tone/gain? preferably enough to get mean snarl when on 9.

I got an EQ pedal that i can use for a 15 db boost, and right now the tubes are really late harsh breakup groove tubes, with a 12at7 in the PI

and yeah its a master volume, but eh, mesa can get away with it

Re: tubes, its a long shot but...

tubes alone won't make it more blackface

you could use a 12AX7 for more gain from the PI. That's usually a straightforward swap, but I'd verify that it's OK in that circuit

Re: tubes, its a long shot but...

the one thing I've learned about tubes and speakers in an effort to make big tone changes is this.... a leopard can't change its spots.

For a differnt tone, you might try a set of KT66HP's in there. But I don't think they'll do what you want it to do.

Re: tubes, its a long shot but...

well i know with new tubes & speakers people can make hot rods really good for natural tube gain

and the tones out of the bassman & a hot rod are REALLY similar

that's a far cry from giving it a more blackface tone, which is how I read Scott's point

Re: tubes, its a long shot but...

well, today i borrowed some GT 12ax7c's from my friend's 5150, put em in all across, plugged into the studio input, gave it a boost via my EQ pedal (15db), cranked the master, had the regular volume at about 2, and well, it's definately closer. The gain was pretty rich, and warm with a little edge, almost too much edge but thats probably due to the power tubes.

I dunno how hi-gain these tubes are, but im thinking maybe some of the mullard RI tubes & i dunno, maybe some GE reissue powertubes, maybe a pickup booster, all in combination would prolly get me really friggin close

but i'm still up for opinions, like i said, it was KINDA what i was looking for, but still a little low-gain, could prolly use some more mids, and a little more warmth

Re: tubes, its a long shot but...

try a pair of TAD 6l6wgc's. Scott's always raving about how they breakup really nicely at lower volumes than larger bottle tubes.
