i just bought 2 shaguang 8th gen from dougs tubes. they should be here by friday, i hope. is it possible for me ro replace them? if so how? how do drain the electro-lytic caps?

Re: tubes, tubes, tubes!

you can replace tubes yourself, i assume they are the preamp tubes, just gently pull out the old ones by pulling in a slight circle motion, put in the new ones. you dont have to drain caps for that.

Re: tubes, tubes, tubes!

What? Circle motion? Ah **** that, just pull 'em out and slap the new ones in if it's preamp tubes ;) (Those are straight pins you know)

Re: tubes, tubes, tubes!

Just do the circle motion if its hard to pull out. Remember it's always good to use a cloth to handle tubes at all times cause oil gets on the tube. Then tubes get hot, so it's not so good. Basically line up the pins with sockets in the amp and push the tube in till it snug.

Re: tubes, tubes, tubes!

I think the circular motion is a slight rocking of the tube to free it from its seat.

You are better off with a straight pull if you can do it. Show the amp who is boss. ;)

Re: tubes, tubes, tubes!

Does anyone gonna say anything about the fact that the Dude needs to rebias too ??? kinda' important for new tubes.

No need to rebias pre-amp tubes. Only necessary for power amp tubes. Change and switch pre-amp tubes till the cows come home if you want...no problems.

Now I am freaking confused, I thought that not only you need to rebias all the tubes when you change them, but periodically as well if you play a lot, but also there are other components that need to be "in tune" i.e. biased besides tubes.

Re: tubes, tubes, tubes!

you DONT have to rebias anything if you are replacing your PREAMP tubes.

If you are changing your poweramp tubes then you need to rebias your amp, take it to an amp tech. It would be the poweramp tubes that you would check once in a while if you want to.
