Tubescreamer Question

Guys, would a TubeScreamer (modded of course) add enough versitility to warrant adding one to my rig?

Current pedals are: MXR Distortion+, MXR EVH90, MXR 10band Eq

A Tweak Fuzz could be added to the mix as well.

What order of pedals do you guys recommend for optimum sound. For whatever its worth, I play everything from SRV to Ozzy

you may mix a tubesvcreamer with a more potent pedal. you also don't *need* to have it modded, although some poeple who have them and want to get more out of them do that. I don't . I use the TS7 with the hot switch on.

I have never used a Tubescreamer in my rig, but I have always had some sort of overdrive...so I would say YES!!! DO the right thing...get a TS-9 and send it to John, as for the order I would go like this

guitar-->Tubescreamer-->Distortion +-->Tweak Fuzz-->Phase 90-->EQ-->Amp

but others will tell you other things.

But cheaper housings Personally, I use my Tube Screamers all the time and I play blues, hard rock, lots of genres and I always find a good use for the TS

Dave....Both the TS5 and the TS7 are made using cheaper Taiwanese components...The circuit is similar,but they don't sound the same... :wink:

no problem, my blue angel is a very dark sounding amp with *tons* of bass- and my pickups are pretty dark as well, which is why the TS7 works quite well. I never said anything about your mods John, I am sure they are great- I get tons of students in the store that read online that pedals need to be modded to sound good. my point is that they should at least try the stock pedal (some have asked me if they should order a pedal and send it to the modder's place before ever trying it!)...in essence, try a stock pedal, and if it doesn't do what you want, then mod it, of course- it is important to know what you are looking for, instead of taking someone's advice. BTW, you would be the first choice I send people to to get their mods done.
Oh, my ears are pretty damn good too

Brother John does great work, but give the Digitech Bad Monkey a try. GC usually has them for $29 and you wont need a mod, the bass and treble knobs work very well.

Here are the OD/ distortion pedals I have used over the years.

1. Pr Co Rat. The originals are good the newer ones not so hot.

2. Boss Super OD. I still use this from time to time. A good all around OD pedal.

3. RI TS9... Slightly more versatile than the Super OD.

4. A Spina modded TS9. Much more throaty than the stock version. It sings really well with single coil PUPS. With HB pickups you will need to roll the gain down a little and bring the tone up some as well. (Just the way I use it).

Much of this will really depend on the Amp you are using. I dont use any OD pedals with my Marshall (900) it has more gain than I can ever use. My Fender Super Reverb I use the Boss and the TS9. The TS9 screams with this Amp. I also have a 1967 Deluxe Reverb and I just started using the modded TS9 with this Amp and it is the best sound I have heard with this pedal so far.

Mixing OD/ distortion pedals is not something I have had a lot of experience with. I basically use these Pedals to give a slight boost in volume and to enhance harmonics and sustain. All of the Pedals that I use are designed and seem to work real well with tube Amps. The basically make the natural tube distortion a little more lively. Thats the sound I like!!

serious?? is the Bad Monkey good? i'm using an RP from them. and IMHO for my taste their overdrive/distortion is not very articulated. and as you have surely noticed ,many people bash digitech products.

I might get bashed here, but I think another great inexpensive option is a TS-10. You can find them used on ebay. I have one and I've never found another Tube Screamer that sounds as smooth and good as my TS-10.

Yes, as a matter of fact, I have two Bad Monkeys! They are sooo different than the RP devices. It doesn't have alot of gain, but you can get a nice crunch/overdrive on a clean amp and it boosts an already crunchy amp into harder crunch as well. It's smooth, but you can add bite with the treble and the bass control does really work too. I'm just real impressed with them. I use them with my Budda SD 80 head and my PV classic 30. Have no idea how they work with solid state amps. I set one for higher gain/lower volume and one just the opposite. Worth as shot for as cheap as they are.

ds-1 also might be an option

though it's not really a 'traditional' boost, you can get a huge volume boost from them, and they can either make your tone warmer or much meaner. As a boost, usually the best thing is to keep the distortion WAAY down (like 9 o'clock or below), and set the tone & volume to taste

but having both a ts and a ds-1 will make for AMAZING versatility, seriously

The Bad Monkey's an amazing deal of a pedal.

I picked it up thinking I would get tired of it. Now it sits at the same level of importance to me as my Spina-modded Tube Screamer.

But I do feel the need to chime in about modding. if you get a pedal just give it a try and see if you like it stock. Seriously, give it some time and do a real evaluation. I only sent my Screamer to John after I was about ready to unload it (it was the TS9DX model).
