Tuning an 8-string BEADGBEA ?

My next guitar will be at least a 7 string, but I'm pondering the idea of getting an 8 string and doing B-A tuning instead of the practically useless F#-E tuning. Is this a popular thing?

Not sure if you can tune the high string up to an A but you could try it. The F# gives you a 4th and would be like playing in standard tuning as for fingerings and chords go.
A popular thing to do with a 8 string is to drop the F# to a E and have a drop E tuning Ebeadgbe.

Re: Tuning an 8-string BEADGBEA ?

Tuning even a .007 string up to A on a regular scale won't be easy at all. bigger strings will certainly break.

Re: Tuning an 8-string BEADGBEA ?

I'm interested in hearing how the common / standard tuning is "useless" when having an extra high string only dogs could hear is beneficial.

As if there aren't enough people using guitars to make high-pitched flurries of random notes.

He's got a lawn and he's not afraid to tell kids to get off it.

Thats the only way i could feasibly own an 8 stringer. I know Rusty Cooley had a sig with Dean thats tuned B-A. I'm pretty sure it had fanned frets which might help too.

Not everybody plays deathcore with extended range guitars.

The high A would be beneficial to people with sausage fingers who get cramped when soloing past the 17th fret.

..and imgine the sweepage you could do with that range too.

for the ADGBEA part, get a set of baritone strings. 14-68 or thereabouts.

and then 78 and 88 for the low E and B respectively. do it up.

Re: Tuning an 8-string BEADGBEA ?

I am not a 7 or 8 string player at all. I have enough trouble with 6 strings plus if I need to go into the basement sonically I have a 30 inch baritone that will go all the way down to E to E with the right strings.

That said bravo for thinking outside the box a little.

Players have done the high A in the past but most 8 string guitars I see are extended scale to help with the F#. I think you're going to have to find a 25.5 inch scale 8 string to make if work but how about this.

String it with a low B then your standard 6 strings then a high A but drop everything a full step.

If you used a typical set of 10 or 11 gauge strings added a low 54 or 58 for the low string and a 7 or 8 for the high string then tuned it ADGCFADG you might really have something you could work with.

Yes! I have a 7 string tuned like this; D G C F A D G (one tone lower than EADGBEA). I use a 10-52 string set for the lower 6 strings and an 8 for the high G.

I get plenty of highs from the high G and grunt from the low D. I do lots of bends on the high G and no breakege at all with the 08 string.

EDIT: It's a 25.5 string length ax.

as stated, i highly doubt you'll get a string you can tune up to A. even the lowest gauge they sell..

Maestro Alex Gregory has been playing custom 7 string Fender Stratocasters since the early 80s and while he uses various tunings most of them feature a high 7th string even going as high as a high B.

It can been done, the player just has to put a bit if thought into the process.

Tuning of a guitar like that should depend largely on your personality. If you're a vegan, you might want to go with 'CABBAGED' tuning . . . if you work in transportation maybe 'BBAGGAGE" . . . if you are a sonic wizard on the guitar you might try 'FEEDBACK' tuning.

You, sir, have just won the internet. Thanks for playing, everyone.

I tried tuning my high string up to K but it broke.

If you could tell me where exactly a "K" is on the fretboard so I can have a reference note that would be great.
