Tuning hardware issue

The Facts - Sperzel locking tuners which can only take about a maximum 58 guage string through the hole in the tuning head

The Issue - I need for it to handle about a 70 guage string on the low side

What are my options to remedy this issue?

Re: Tuning hardware issue

not much....

if you don't mind wrecking a tuning you could experiment and see if you could drill a slightly larger hole in the tuner... BUT YOU MAY TURN IT INTO JUNK.... you may just want to switch tuners

Does Sperzel make any kind of larger head locking tuner or something for higher guages? I really didn't want to throw a random new piece of hardware on there that stands out like a sore thumb against the others.

not that i know of... maybe someone else knows for sure but i've never seen it...

I meant change all the tuners not just the one... what guitar is it?

what on earth are you doing that needs bass string gauges anyways? will the neck, nut, bridge sopport such strings?

I have the low side tuned down to A... it was fine at B with a 58 guage... now it's just a little slinky for my likes and I like the feel of a huge string on low tunings. And yeah, the guitar will support it fine.

Awhile back, I strung up a 26.5" scale Yamaha with 18-80, tuned an octave low, and it was fine, so yeah, he'll be alright.

You might think about contacting Sperzel. With the current popularity of both locking tuners and bands who tune really low, it seems like they've had to have encountered this problem already.

They're actually the only ones I've ever encountered this problem with. I guess they're a little more low profile due to the locking aspect.
