tuning keys

ok so I'm kind of upgrading my epi les paul, just ordered a jazz/jb and such. no i'm looking at replacing the tuning keys (my $150 acoustic holds a pitch much better). I've heard grovers are good. I guess what I'm asking is, can I just order them online ( http://www.musiciansfriend.com/srs7.../s=accessories/search/detail/base_pid/361000/) and expect to install them myself, or is this something a tech should do.

Also, are there any other upgrades I should be thinking about? right now the pups and tuners are the only things on my agenda....

Re: tuning keys

If you go with Grover tuners then be sure to get the 18:1 ratio. They keep you tuned great. I'd recommend upgrading you pots and toggle switch to Gibson parts. They are higher quality and more reliable. I would also recommend some Schaller strap locks and if you really want to improve the sustain have a luthier install a bone nut (if you're not experienced in changing nuts I don't recommend experimenting with you own guitar). :22:

Re: tuning keys

When changing tuners You should check the diameter of your peg holes.
Not all are direct replacements. Some aftermarket tuners may require
a larger peg hole ? If your not comfortable with wideing the holes take
it to a tech. :)

Re: tuning keys

I like the Grover and Schaller locking tuners best. You should be able to find something that's a direct replacement for a Les Paul, but if not, be prepared to drill new holes for the screws on the back of the headstock. Most tuners use a 10 mm sized hole, so if your guitar has a smaller hole, it'll need to be reamed to the slightly larger 10 mm size. If you're not very handy with tools, this is most definitely a job for a tech. If you can find tuners that are a direct replacement, you can just take the old ones off and put the new ones on.
