Re: Tuning Preference?

I like to keep my guitars in tune. But I use a lot of tunings. Open G/A Open D/E, Standard, G minor and a weird Bb9 tuning.

Re: Tuning Preference?

It depends on the band, gig and situation but most of the time standard A440 or an open tuning...I keep one in open G and one in open E all the time and move other stuff around as I need to.

Re: Tuning Preference?

At home I like to play along with CD's and satellite radio. If I'm down-tuned, that messes me up with playing along, especially if open strings are important to the way a song's played (like Zeppelin's 'Rock and Roll' and 'Lemon Song'). I play blues and classic rock, and almost everyone I've talked to in those genres uses standard tuning. I listen to very little metal, so I'm not caught up in the world of down-tuning and 7 or 8 strings guitars. Seems very alien to me. But hey, I'm an old guy.

Re: Tuning Preference?

For me it's whatever the song requires. Most of the stuff I play ranges from E standard to a half step down, to C standard, C# standard, drop D and drop C. If I was going to play and/or write in a key it would be E flat.

Re: Tuning Preference?

I mostly play in standard, though I keep a couple of guitars tuned down 1/2 step, which is handy for a fair amount of stuff I play -- Van Halen, Slayer, GNR, generic blues-rock, Malmsteen.
Sometimes I'll do drop-D, and I've found I also like playing about 1/4 step down, which is great for some of the old Van Halen.
My one 7-string guitar is standard B-E.

Re: Tuning Preference?

Standard A-440 tuning 98% of the time, to be in tune with the keyboard. I switch to drop-D on the fly for the occasional song. When playing slide, I sometimes tune to an open E7. I don't have any 7- or 8-string guitars, though.

EDIT: The poll is flawed.

Re: Tuning Preference?

I voted standard, but that's because I use only variations of standard tuning.

Right now I have two guitars in E standard (SG with 9-46 & Strat with 9-42), one in D standard (Ibanez-dual humbuckers -11-52) and one in C standard (dual humbucker strat- 12-56).

I don't use drop tunings.

A couple weeks ago I had my S/S/S Strat in C and I didn't like it. The single coils lost their single coilyness with the thick meaty sound of C standard tunings, so I went back to standard with 9-42s.

Re: Tuning Preference?

I have enough trouble finding the right notes without trying to juggle in a rollercoaster.

Re: Tuning Preference?

My Super Strat with a Floyd I keep in Standard just because its easier that way and my Dean Razor Back is in Drop C# I believe but I hardly ever play that guitar. I had a strat set up for Eb standard but it was stolen so I just go with my super strat for most applications. Most songs I can work out a way to play them in standard tuning but if not ill just use a capo instead of down tuning. Ideally if I could I would have a guitar set up for every tuning but since thats not feesible I would get two guitars tune one to C standard another to Drop C and use a capo if I need a higher tuning. For the most part I can play most songs in standard

Re: Tuning Preference?

Standard for me. I try new tunings every once in a while but don't write much music out of std. Earlier this year I wrote 3 or 4 full songs in Drop D and one song in C. Kinda cool but I don't do it often.

Re: Tuning Preference?

Once you move the tuners, its no longer mint condition. Automatic drop in value. I can't take that gamble.

Re: Tuning Preference?

Standard tuning most of the time. As far as retunings go, I use double drop D most commonly. Then various open keys (G, D, A, E, B), either for slide or for certain folk-style songs.

I also sometimes tune short neck guitars to F standard, but that is the only "standard" tuning I use that is not E.
